Ed Bott - Microsoft Report Ed Bott - Microsoft Report

Nothing stealthy about this Windows Update updateFor years, Microsoft has occasionally updated its Windows Update client software automatically on systems that are configured to check for updates. This has been true even when Windows Update is set to simply check for (and optionally, download) updates but not to install them. That decision led to a flurry of negative publicity about “stealth” Windows [...]

Microsoft Equipt: good deal, lousy nameMicrosoft Equipt is a subscription-based combo of Office Home and Student 2007, Windows Live OneCare, and the cloud-based Office Live Workspace service. It worked great when I beta-tested it earlier this year, and at $70 a year for three PCs it's a good deal for most home users. So how come the only retail partner signed up is the struggling Circuit City?

Intel stays behind the curve … againIntel’s decision to continue using Windows XP instead of migrating to Windows Vista is being spun as a stunning rebuke to Microsoft and a rejection of Windows Vista. Except that there’s nothing new here. The same thing happened in 2002, when Windows XP was shiny and new. Corporations like Intel are always slow to roll out new Windows versions. Add in a slowing economy and a new Windows version due to arrive next year and you have all the ingredients an IT department needs to skip a version. So why is this a surprise to anyone?

10 top Vista tweaks, part 2As I noted in the first installment of this series, some of my favorite productivity-enhancing techniques don’t involve custom code or registry edits. Instead, they involve learning how the basic building blocks of Windows work, and then rearranging those components to cut steps out of the tasks you perform most often. In today’s installment of this two-part series, I share some of my favorite tweaks for getting maximum mileage out of Windows Search. I also explain the inner workings of volume shadow copies and how you can make better use of these automatic backups with System Restore and the Previous Versions feature. I show how to get quick access to your local and network data files by combining shortcuts in a single, easy-to-reach l

10 top tweaks for Windows VistaThe best ways to enhance performance and productivity with Windows are usually fairly simple. They don’t require registry edits or custom code; instead, they involve learning how the basic building blocks of Windows work, and then rearranging those components to cut steps out of the tasks you perform most often. Vista changed some of those building blocks, and many people are struggling because they’re trying to use the new tools with the old techniques. In that spirit, I’ve put together this list of my 10 favorite tweaks to Windows Vista. In Part 1 of a two-part series, I explain how to make the list of installed programs easier to work with and how to tweak the taskbar, the Start menu, the Quick Launch toolbar, and Windows Explorer.

Windows Home Server gets a big bug fix (and much more)Microsoft today announced that it has released a public beta version of Power Pack 1 for Windows Home Server. It’s more than a service pack, with at least two significant new features and a long list of enhancements. Forget about the new stuff, though. Every Windows Home Server user wants to know: Does this update fix the data corruption bug first uncovered late last year? The short answer is yes. The longer answer is yes, and the delay was worth it. Here's an inside look at what you can expect from Power Pack 1 and how you can get your hands on it.

Fixing Windows Vista, Part 5: Faster, smarter searchIn previous installments of this series, I discussed the virtues of a clean Vista install, some useful User Account Control workarounds, top tools for troubleshooting, and the wisdom of shutting off Windows system services. Today’s fifth and final installment is a little different from its predecessors. It focuses not so much on fixing what might be broken, but rather on taking advantage of a feature in Windows Vista that has the potential to transform the way you work. Through the years, I’ve tried just about every third-party desktop search utility for Windows. But I threw them all away after a few weeks of using Vista’s built-in Windows Search capability. In this post, I’ll explain how Windows Search works, how to monitor the Se

Debunking yet another bogus malware studyHere we go again, with yet another round of bogus reporting about the extent of malware infections in the United States. A wide range of news agencies are reporting the results of a new report that supposedly reveals that one in four computers in the U.S. are infected with malware. But all it takes is a little digging to discover that this is literally a fourth-hand report of data originally gathered in 2005. The most ironic part? When I tried to view the original report from the Pew Internet project, Google stopped me with a false warning that I was about to visit an unsafe site.

Make you think: Top 10 modern business information security risksYou have firewalls and anti-malware system, video surveillance and monitoring systems for network traffic to and from the Internet. But look at eWeek's semi-smart list of the top ten infosec risks workers pose to your business today, and you may need to rethink your plans. I call this a "semi-smart" list because it's practical and real-world, and doesn't assume the "standards" out there cover all the bases. But, at the same time it doesn't offer much in the way of solutions, which always frustrates me (and it misses some key points, especially related to intentional worker behavior, as opposed to neglect, and how it can substantially enhance the potential associated with these risks). Point is, each of the items pointed out is very much

And, if you never watched Star Trek then you shouldn't even be a CIO." But the list contains several important and valuable points, it's not just humor. When you consider an annual OneCare subscription runs you $50 a year and a copy of Office Home and Student Edition sells for a one-time fee of $150 (and a new version seems to come out every three years on average), it's an attractive deal. Trying Blogo - a decent blog authoring client for the MacI've really missed Windows Live Writer since I starting using my Macbook Air so much. Even though I have it in a Fusion virtual machine running Windows, I find I rarely use it since it uses the VM's filesystem (not the Mac's), and copying stuff onto the Mac clipoard and then pasting into a Windows virtualized app is not what one might wish. I was pleasantly surprised to run across a Mac app called Blogo, which I am using to write this post. It's nowhere near as feature-rich as Live Writer, but Blogo is a great start on a WYSIWYG editor with many of the bells and whistles. Lost your laptop at the airport? You’re not alone!Came across this interesting article in ComputerWorld that says that in the US alone, more than 10,000 laptops go missing every week! I’ll be watching mine closely whilst I’m travelling in July – I recommend you do the same.  The funny thing in the article is that most people are too ashamed to report that they have lost their laptop! CIOs are scared about hearing these stories from their staff because of the risk of losing intellectual property and company secrets.  Technologies like Bitlocker help to prevent this information falling into the wrong hands.

Partners – How do you want your training?Microsoft provides a huge amount of training, information, product data, sales guides, technical guides etc on a huge range of products and services and consuming this in it’s various formats is a challenge.  Blogs, Live Meetings, Videos, Podcasts, Powerpoint Presentations, Face to face events, PDFs, Word documents – the list goes on. Finding the right information is difficult to do.  I often refer to the Partner Portal when speaking to partners about where to find more information and I often wonder how they get on with their hunt for the resources they are looking for.  I know it’s there but do they ever find what I was referring to?  I also wonder what is the most popular format to consume content and to best aide learning.Â

Microsoft Environmental StrategyWith increased investment into datacenters around the world it is important to consider the environmental impact and factor in plans for reducing energy consumption and the carbon footprint of new installations.  As a software company we have a big part to play by providing the tools and guidance with which to be as efficient as possible when it comes to doing IT.  We’ve just launched a new website that talks about what Microsoft is doing to help things and also for providing useful information for other companies who run computers (I’m guessing that’s most) to make sure they are doing the most to reduce their carbon footprint. You can check out the website here and there is also a good intro video where I learned some interesting

Moving your business to a client/server environmentI've said before I really like the Smart Business Newsletter that Microsoft produces - there's really useful information in there and I would recommend you take a look if you are a small business and are making IT decisions or want to do smart business using IT. This month I'm actually part of the action!  Check out my article on moving to a client/server architecture here.  There are some gems in there that will help you save a lot of money (e.g. leveraging Windows Mobile) whilst maximising your investment (e.g. Active Directory and Group Policy). I need to have a word with the editors about that picture though :-)

In the first installment of Optimizing for Entertainment and Networking at EHX Spring's Media Center University, Mike Seamons provides guidance on choosing one technology over another. When the Cloud goes downOver the weekend one of the services in the cloud that I consume - Statcounter - experienced some unplanned downtime.  In this instance it wasn't simply a hard drive failure or CPU burnout that could have been mitigated by a mirrored database or web server, it was a fire caused by a generator that took down an entire datacenter.  I imagine Statcounter are now thinking about their GeoClustering where server resources are mirrored between physical datacenters to prevent a reliance on one physical installation. It just brought it home to me the delicate nature of the services we consume and take for granted on the internet.  Without the correct planning and risk assessments users can have their usual level of service interrupted which ca

MSN customised page gets beta updateWe haven’t mentioned MSN for a while, mainly due to all the Microsoft-Yahoo talk that’s been going on. However a few days ago the My MSN customised homepage launched a new beta version, available at http://next.my.msn.com. So what’s new? Well the most striking thing you’ll notice when comparing it to the old site is that it now features the new-style header UI. This includes the drop down menu linking users to all the other MSN sites, as well as offering access to the main Live Search verticals straight from the page. Other new pieces include an embedded MSN Video player, showing the most popular videos right now, tooltips to improve the first-run experience, and the standard modules such as Hotmail inbox, most popular searches

How to build a cloud: Debra Chrapaty on data centersWhen we talked to Bill Gates last November at Mix n Mash, he described Windows Live: All those consumer services are basically big, big volume. They're tiny businesses in a sense, but they're very important for the population of users that you connect up to and the opportunities you get out of that. Some of the things like state in the sky, obviously we want to do a lot more innovation so that everybody just understands that they should use that. Today, no matter whose thing it is, .Mac or the various eDrive cloud store type things, they actually are all pretty small share, they're kind of messy to use. We think that by the way that we'll connect up to Windows in a rich way we'll be able to do something pretty dramatic there, but that awai

Top 5 things to know about Hyper-VMy name is Ronald Beekelaar. I'm a Microsoft MVP of Virtual Machine Technology, based in Amsterdam. I have my own consultancy firm, and since 2002 I focus on virtualization. At first, this was strictly VMware-oriented, but a few years later this included Microsoft's virtualization products as well.   Since the first public beta of Hyper-V more than a year ago, I have done many presentations about Hyper-V at various events, and talked to a lot of customers about transitioning to Hyper-V. The people I talk to can be divided into two groups: they either have experience with Microsoft Virtual PC and Virtual Server, or they only know the VMware products and are just now looking into Hyper-V. However, for both groups, and despite very differen

Virtualization wrap from TechEd IT ProI'm NOT in Orlando this week attending TechEd IT Pro conference. That means I get to enjoy Redmond's "wintery" spring weather and not Orlando's hot/humid thunderstorms. For those of you also NOT in Orlando, you can follow along with the happenings at a few spots: Scott Lowe's blog, focus on virtualization (and expect comparisons to VMware's tools) Margie Semilof from Techtarget will be publishing articles Go here for blog roll and a bunch of news sources from the conference I'll point out a few cool items from today's keynote: You can now get cooperative technical support from Microsoft and four (initial) vendors [Citrix, Novell, Sun, Virtual Iron] when running Windows Server 2008 (or 2003, or 2000). How so? Microsoft's Server Virtualizat

Hyper-V WMI – Cloning Virtual Machines Using Import/ExportI have officially given up on the “Hyper-V WMI Using PowerShell Scripts” serious, not because of lack of interest but because or extreme interest implying that I would need to do Part 5, 6, 7, 99…  Counting past 5 is hard so from now on I will just title the posts for what they are doing.  Today’s post is going to be an end-to-end script to create 10 clones of a given VM. Here’s a quick tour of the script… This script takes 4 parameters:      MasterVM – this is the name of the VM that will be cloned      Path – this is the base path where the clones will reside      NewName – this is what the cloned VM’s will be named      HyperVHost – this is the name of the host that the script will

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL | Google Lawyers Look to Hide YouTube-User IdentificationGoogle Lawyers Look to Hide YouTube-User Identification By JESSICA E. VASCELLARO and MERISSA MARR July 4, 2008 6:57 a.m. Lawyers for Google Inc. Thursday asked Viacom Inc. for permission to better hide information that might help personally identify YouTube users before Google complies with a judge's demand that it hand over YouTube "user logs" -- the records of what videos people watch -- to Viacom. The letter comes a day after a federal judge in New York ordered Google to give Viacom a database that links users of YouTube -- a Google unit -- with every video clip they have ever watched through the service in conjunction with Viacom's $1 billion copyright suit against Google. A Viacom spokesman said Thursday that the data the c

LOS ANGELES TIMES | Ruling against YouTube worries privacy advocatesRuling against YouTube worries privacy advocates A judge's order to divulge log-ons and Internet Protocol addresses in a Viacom copyright case could lead to users' identities being revealed, some fear. By Joseph Menn and Jessica Guynn Los Angeles Times Staff Writers July 4, 2008 A billion-dollar court clash between old- and new-media giants took on unexpected privacy ramifications this week when a federal judge ordered YouTube to hand over the log-on names and Internet addresses of every person who had viewed material on the Web's top video site -- tens of millions of people. Viacom Inc. wants YouTube's logs to help it determine whether unauthorized material makes up a major share of what's watched there. The media giant, which owns

June 2008 Top ConversationsJune was an interesting month with two main topics that generated traffic and conversation. The most conversation was about women in computer science. Women and Minorities in Computer Science had several comments and attracted a lot of readers. But Articles About STEM Education had 11 different comments and is one of the most commented on posts I’ve had in a while. A pair of posts I made about projects for a computer science classroom A Group Project – Create an Index File System and A Whole Pile of Programming Competition Questions also received a lot of traffic though not many comments. A post called Computer Labs As Crutch which was inspired by a post by Mike Sansone also attracted traffic and comments. That one was a little differe

SharePoint Object Hierarchy: How it all fits togetherI often get asked to clarify how all of the objects in SharePoint relate to each. For example, people do not always understanding the differnence between a site collection and a site or how a web application and content database relate to each other. I did consider writing some kind of description to go with this, however I think it is better that I just do my best...(read more)

Did you know… You can save your Menu and Command Bar customizations to a file? - #252Happy 4th of July!!  I’m actually in Orlando, hanging out with one of my oldest friends Rebecca.  We went to kindergarten to our first semester of college together.  She’s a saint for putting up with me all these years, as my energy level growing up was probably 2x what it is today. Here’s a pic of Rebecca and I after TechEd.  I need to learn to keep my eyes open. But now, let’s return to your locally scheduled Tip of the Day, already in progress… A while back, I did a series of tips on how to customize your Menus and Command bar.  Some of these included how to make a toolbar floating, how to drag and drop toolbar buttons, and change commands on context menus. You can save just your menu, command bar, and cont

Bill Gates as McCain's VP? Don't count on itPolitico.com this morning put Bill Gates on its speculative list of longshot vice-presidential possibilities, quoting anonymous Republican and Democratic operatives saying he would be Republican candidate John McCain's "dream running mate." The site added: "Gates could position McCain as a trusted voice on the economy and his multi-billion dollar commitment to charitable giving could soften up the campaign's image." One problem: It's not going to happen.

No BS: A glimpse of the real Bill GatesNewspapers, magazines and blogs are saturated with reports about Bill Gates leaving daily life at Microsoft, to the point that people may be getting tired of it. But the coverage, collectively, has resulted in a new level of insight into Gates' personality, how he thinks, and how he ran the company. Along those lines, these were my favorite nuggets:

Then Gates addressed Microsoft's employees for the last time in his full-time role. Here's what he said.

Audio: Early Microsoft office manager on GatesOne of the most legendary stories from Microsoft's early days is the tale of the first time Miriam Lubow, the company's early office manager, saw Bill Gates walk into the office in Albuquerque. With Gates in his last week as a full-timer at the company, I spoke on the phone today with Lubow, now 72 and living in Kirkland. I asked her to tell me the story in her own words. Here's the audio, recorded and posted here with her permission.
