Co-evolvingI heard a term the other day that I really liked: co-evolve. It was said in the context of humans and technology…humans and technology co-evolve together. In other words, we change technology by creating it, and then it changes us as we use it. And we both change in response to each other. Many times [...]

Bill Gates upset with Windows UsabilityThis is just too juicy to not share with everyone. Social Design Patterns for Reputation Systems: An Interview with Yahoo’s Bryce Glass (Part I)Of all the social software built on the web in the last two decades, none are as important yet as little talked about as reputation systems. 5 ways to improve reputation systemsAs more and more companies “go social” (as the NYTimes just did), we’ll see a growing need for well-designed reputation systems. CenterNetworks Asks: How Many Web 2.0 Services Have Gone Mainstream?Last week I had lunch with a friend and the entire conversation was around Web 2.0 startups. We discussed a variety of different topics but the one that dominated the conversation was how many startups that aim to go mainstream actually have. We named startup after startup and said no to nearly all of them. With that said, I'd like to experiment with a new feature on CN - that is "CenterNetworks Asks". I will pose a fairly open question to get the discussion going and see where it takes us. So what Web 2.0 startups that have targeted the mainstream have been successful in going mainstream? I will start with Facebook. If you need help finding startups to consider, check out Orli's Go2Web20 startup directory. Partner Links-- Free On

FeedBurner CFO Departs Google and Heads For Vibes MediaDuncan Riley is reporting that former FeedBurner CFO (before they were acquired by Google) has left Google to join Vibes Media. Riley notes, "He also headed up Yahoo’s business operations for some time before his FeedBurner days. Chicago-based Vibes Media has been creating text message-based marketing campaigns for a full decade. As such, we pity its employees’ social lives; surely chicks can’t be willing to hand over their digits to a guy whose job involves sending out text ads." We've also learned that former head of PR for FeedBurner Traci Hailpern left Google in June.

Just How Much is the Conversation Worth?I've written before about the new comment replacement services including IntenseDebate and the new social sharing service FriendFeed before. After one of my posts, Robert Scoble noted that he had a discussion with an "a-list blog" and that the blogger wasn't willing to replace the comments with any of the new tools because of what he would lose in terms of monetization. While blogs that aren't trying to earn direct revenue don't care as much about losing the pageviews and the impressions, blogs that are revenue-driven enterprises do. As a variety of blogs move out of the typical blog layer and into the new mainstream media layer, the ability to earn revenue becomes even more important. Even just a switch to Ajaxy-comments where the page

I Swear Your Honor, I Didn't Know That Video Was Copyrighted! So the big news this morning is that a judge here in New York State has issued a ruling in which Techcrunch editor Michael Arrington notes, "That data includes every YouTube username, the associated IP address and the videos that user has watched on YouTube. Google will also be required to hand over copies of every video removed from Youtube for any reason." Arrington goes on to call the judge a moron. I am certainly no lawyer, but how was I supposed to know that a video I viewed on YouTube was copyrighted and that I should not have viewed it? Should I have kept a real-time pocket guide of which videos are ok and which aren't? Please note that I have never viewed a copyrighted video on YouTube. Ryan Singel from Wired notes, "Viacom fi

Why I'm Not Purchasing an iPhone 3G and Why Apple is a Brilliant Company (video)Next week the Apple iPhone 3G will be released and the lines will be long. I put together the video below to cover two topics: why I am not purchasing an iPhone 3G and why Apple is a brilliant company. Here are just a few notes from the video: I won't be purchasing the iPhone because it's too expensive and because I found it hard to type. The Web browser and mobile applications will be awesome and that I will certainly miss, but my Samsung Ace matches it in all other areas. I found the Ace easier to type on, in fact I can write entire blog posts easily on the Ace whereas I was unable to on the iPhone. The cost difference in a nearly identical comparison is nearly $800 for the year and that's just way too much to consider. My take is th

Blogged Creates a News Portal; Basically a Human Version of BlogrunnerWe initially reviewed blog directory Blogged earlier this year. It's a human curated blog directory that provides a (somewhat bogus) score for each blog. Today Blogged is back with their launch of a news portal site. Blogged editors will pull breaking news and the most compelling stories from their content categories (technology, entertainment, sports, etc.) and then displays the stories on the frontpage. Here is how Blogged compares itself to the other news sites like Google News and Yahoo News along with the "meme trackers" like TechMeme: Google News and Yahoo News feature top stories from traditional news sources using a combination of technology and human editors. Memetrackers such as Techmeme and Blogrunner use algorithms to ident

They are also planning iPhone apps and APIs so that developers can pull data out of their content repository. I am very excited to see that they are thinking about widgets. Is YouTube Killing Video Originality? The promise of web video was that cheap cameras, easy editing software and free online distribution would open up new vistas of creativity. Instead we’re just seeing the same things, mostly parodies, over and over. Some are just recycling the same ideas. It’s just becoming faster and easier, which is spawning more of it, as [...]

The Real Reason Powerset Sold (Out)Powerset founder Barney Pell used to turn blue in the face telling people how superior his company's approach to search was, yet now he's selling the firm to Microsoft for a rumored $100 million. The move is not, however, simply a reflection of how well Powerset was doing but of how much money the company was faced with spending in order to compete with Google.

Bringing Friendfeed Comments Home To Your BlogAs Friendfeed starts to get better and better, and people start to contribute more to the site, users will increasingly want to find ways to export that valuable data back to their own blogs. After all, if you're the webmaster of your own blog, your obvious first priority is to drive that traffic back to your own site. More traffic equals more pageviews and more pageviews equals more Adsense clicks and more RSS subscribers. So it makes sense that you would want that bustling Friendfeed activity to be moved over to your own domain. Luckily a couple of Friendfeed users have been hard at work dealing with that very issue and if you have a blog hosted on either Blogger or Wordpress, then you are in luck. But no, it is once again another Web 2.0 name and once again another lifestreaming service that tries to imitate Twitter, while at the same time it tries to show people how different it is from Twitter. Confused? Don't worry, you won't be in a moment. In a nutshell, Plurk is basically the same as Twitter but with a "timeline" thrown in. Exclusively confined to the website at the moment (there aren't any Plurk desktop apps right now - yet), you are able to say to the world what you are doing, how you are feeling, what you want, and much more. You can even share weblinks such as YouTube videos - which are playable inside the timeline. The

Could Stumbleupon Help To Revolutionize Online Search?Out of all the online social networks I have tried, the one I always continue to use on a regular basis is Stumbleupon. Clicking that Stumble button is like a drug and many a hour has disappeared without a trace while I find sites that I wouldn't normally have found without the aid of this amazing social network. But to simply label Stumbleupon a social network where you can find other amazing websites belittles its other amazing potential. For example, I have noticed it starting to influence search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Could Stumbleupon's human-filtered search results be the beginning of the next evolution of search engines that could see the all-powerful Google algorithim be made redundant?

The Art of Conversation - Thoughts and ObservationsWe all purport to be social media experts these days, yet most of us are truly students. Many of us overlook some of the most rudimentary elements that define and inspire the socialization of content, especially the social sciences involved with observing the culture, behavior, and conversations within online societies. We're excited, and maybe even obsessed, by the tools. We frantically rush from service to service in an exhausting attempt to keep up with our peers, fearing that we may one day relinquish our position as a leading authority on the subject of all things social. We are edglings, and the membership dues are paid in the form of time, attention, vision, and translation as we bring shiny new objects from the edge to the center. But

The Escalator Pitch, Going Up?The escalator is the new elevator when it comes to pitching and the emerging practice of micro public relations. I'm part of a growing number of PR folks who are committed to sharing stories, experiences, tools, practices, and ideas on how to specifically fix the relationships between PR and influencers. But, it's not only PR people who are guilty of unfocused and irrelevant storytelling (spam), it's also company executives and founders who lose a bit of perspective during the reality and grind of product development. At the very minimum, it’s a basic search tool that operates similar to how you would naturally search in Yahoo or Google. Both tools bring Twitter alive and expose the layers of conversations taking place that matter to your personal life, your professional brand or the companies/products you may represent. Developed by Summize Labs, Summize’s mission is to search and discover the topics and attitudes expressed within online conversations. Summize, provides clea

MicroPR Personalizes Public RelationsNew media is forcing the rapid evolution of communications and is reinventing the science of public relations into the art of “personalized” relations. And, with micromedia further refining and improving how we communicate with each other, PR is going to learn the hard way, that the days of blasts and untargeted spam pitching will get us nowhere with today’s influencers.Stowe Boyd placed a stake in the ground during the Web 2.0 Expo with the introduction of #TwitPitch, a very streamlined way for using Twitter to simplify the process of booking briefings with companies during the show. It forced PR to distill their message in 140 characters, which, in the process, tightened and streamlined the typical elevator pitch. As Stowe says, â€

Social Media - Should You Use it Or Focus Upon Building Your Own Properties?Steve Rubel has a thought provoking post today asking the question - should you rent or buy social real estate? In it he explores the idea of using a service like Twitter (where you ‘rent’ and build up a community on someone else’s property) versus having your own blog on your own domain (buying). My immediate reaction [...]

Connecting The Dots Of The Web RevolutionFor several days my brain has been connecting the blogstorm over AP trying to dictate how much of their content can be quoted on the web with the "quote" that Nick Carr lifted from one of my blog posts in his Atlantic article -- I finally figured out why. If Your Users Fail, Your Website Fails, Regardless Of Intent Or DesignOn the web, in the age of Google, design has no margin of error, and there are no stupid users, only inadequate designs. ReadWriteWeb Integrates FriendFeed Into Our Comments2008 has seen a big change in the way the blogging community communicates with each other. In a nutshell, discussions have become very fragmented. There are two main reasons for this: firstly Twitter and its 140 character soundbites has become very popular among bloggers, and secondly FriendFeed has tipped as the lifestreaming aggregator of choice for many people. The upshot is that there are now many places where people can have online discussions. This has been a challenge to blog publishers, for whom comments are an integral part of the blogging experience. Over the past few months, the ReadWriteWeb team has been discussing internally how to adapt to this. We've discussed whether to use services such as Disqus, YackTrack and SezWho, whi

They come to the conclusion that, even if Yahoo sells off its search division, Yahoo's other properties probably wouldn't be too affected by this, as they get most of their traffic from Google's search anyway. Only Yahoo Image Search, Games, Maps, and News get most of their traffic from Yahoo Search. digg_url = 'http://digg.com/tech_news/Yahoo_Would_be_Just_Fine_Without_Search';digg_bgcolor = '#ffffff';digg_skin = 'normal';Looking at these statistics, it becomes clear that most of Yahoo's properties would continue doing just fine without getting traffic from Yahoo Search. Regator: Mainstreaming RSS Aggregators - 100 InvitesWhile quite a few mainstream users use RSS daily on their personalized homepages without ever knowing it, more traditional RSS aggregators are only slowly expanding beyond the early adopter crowd. Regator, which released a private beta today, is courting these mainstream users by giving them a very straightforward and easy way to browse RSS feeds while keeping the layout of more traditional RSS aggregators. Courting Mainstream Users A couple of things set Regator apart from other RSS aggregators like Bloglines, Newsgator, or Google Reader. First of all, Regator only offers a set of roughly 3000 blogs to subscribe to, as well as 'channels,' like Technology, Politics, Sports, etc. You can't import your own OPML files or subscribe to blogs

Mapstraction Takes Map Mashups To A Whole New LevelIf you're a developer who loves to build mashups - especially map mashups - then you have to check out the library provided by Mapstaction. (And if you're end user, wait until you see the demos!) Mapstraction is library that provides a common API for various mapping APIs already in existence. This allows developers to use the Mapstraction API to build a mashup that supports nine of the major mapping providers including Google Maps, Microsoft's Virtual Earth, Yahoo Maps, and more. There are several reasons why a developer might want to use the Mapstraction library to build a mashup. For one, they would only need to code their apps once and then they could switch the mapping provider as necessary when their project's needs changed. A Program

Viacom Gets YouTube User DataIn the ongoing copyright litigation between Google and Viacom, a judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York has ordered Google (PDF) to hand over data on every YouTube user, including username, the associated IP address, and a list of all the the videos that user ever watched. In this lawsuit, Viacom is seeking more than $1 billion in damages because of alleged copyright violations on YouTube. Besides this user data, Viacom also sought access to Google's source code for its web and video search, as well as for its 'Video ID' program. SeeqPod Launches PodListsThe music search engine SeeqPod has just announced a new service for music fans: "PodLists." Because of the massive amount of playable search results available on the SeeqPod service - 12 million at the moment and ever-growing - it can be difficult to find music that you like. Sites like Last.fm rely on social recommendations to help you find new artists, but SeeqPod's take is a bit different. Instead of launching social features, they'll be posting fresh, customized playlists to the site's homepage on a daily basis. Each PodList will have an identifying theme - for example, today's include the "SeeqPod Top 20," "Old School Rap," and "Funk For Ya Trunk." The idea is that instead of having social recommendations in place, you can be expo

Does Microsoft + Powerset Beat Google? What can the plan be with Microsoft's purchase of hot startup Powerset? The 3-year old company, founded by Dr Barney Pell, recently launched a semantic search experience for Wikipedia. It is doubtful that Microsoft bought the company just to enhance Live Search.
