For me, the most intriguing parts of the story concern various observations by researchers studying the behavior of individuals with various forms of left-brain damage, “some of whom,” writes author E.S. Browning, “have developed artistic, musical, and other talents, apparently using right-brain capabilities that ordinarily are hard to tap.” Recounting his conversations with Bruce Miller, professor of neurology at UC-San Francisco, Browning writes thus: “An almo

Why Powerset is important and differentMicrosoft announced yesterday the acquisition of Powerset, a natural language search engine. Techmeme has lots of stories about the acquisition. Today the stories are all about Microsoft/Yahoo potential deals. But lets take a step back and look at how Powerset works and why it is an important development in search. There are two key things to consider; Powerset technology is more about indexing the content and understanding its meaning, than the query itself. This has enormous implications. There are many lucrative markets for this technology...not just consumer web search. How does natural language search work? There is a lot of linguistic rocket science to this but basically it breaks the search problem into two parts. First, unders

Lanchester's Laws for StartupsInteresting rule of thumb based on military operational research performed by Frederick Lanchester during World War I: If you’re trying to enter an existing market where the dominant player has greater than 40% market share, you will need to spend at least 3x the sales/marketing budget of that leader to succeed in a head-on attack. However, if the largest player has less than 25% market share, all you need is 2x the sales/marketing budget of the leader to succeed – the cost of entry is much lower. Thus, if you're a startup confronting a formidable incumbent that you lack the financial wherewithal for a frontal assault, consider re-segmenting the market to create a submarket where your product can be unique or substantially different. As a

Marc Andreessen Joins Facebook BoardThe news today was Marc Andreessen's joining the board of Facebook. From Netscape to Facebook, some interesting ironies along the way. Marc is also a founder of Ning, a social networking application. So why is this important to startups? It's because Marc will be a terrific mentor to Mark Zuckerberg. Having the right board members is so important to your startup's success. This is Mark's quote"  "I know Marc will be a great mentor to me and our leadership team. He has experience that is relevant to Facebook in so many ways: scaling companies that are experiencing extraordinary growth, creating successful technology platforms, and building strong engineering organizations." Marc (the "c" Andreessen variety) writes a wonderful blog for start

Go Public? (Why Would Anyone Want To Do That?)Over the last few weeks I’ve seen an uptick in news articles citing the lack of tech IPOs (my colleague Don Dodge wrote on this just days ago). Don mentioned some of the macro-economic factors driving the dearth of tech IPOs. But there is another key factor that I haven’t seen discussed much in the major press outlets: CEOs simply no longer see any value in going public. Ever since Sarbanes-Oxley (and other restrictive regulation around publicly marketable securities), smart CEOs have observed that, unless the market is exceptionally hot, the costs of going public simply outweigh the benefits. If executives of a promising, high-growth company want to take some risk off the table, they can almost certainly negotiate a share sale to pr

Microsoft acquires PowersetMicrosoft has agreed to acquire Powerset, a Natural Language search engine, founded by Barney Pell. Satya Nadella, Senior Vice President, Search, Portal, and Advertising said on his blog; Powerset will join our core Search Relevance team, remaining intact in San Francisco. Powerset brings with it natural language technology that nicely complements other natural language processing technologies we have in Microsoft Research. More importantly, Powerset brings to Live Search a set of talented engineers and computational linguists in downtown San Francisco. Information security weakest link? Stolen laptops and cell phonesOver 600,000 laptops are reported lost or stolen every year at US airports according to a ComputerWorld story. The story, based on a survey by the Ponemon Institute says that 65% of them are never recovered. Laptops are most often lost at security checkpoints. Hotels and taxi cabs are also prime locations for losing laptops and cell phones.   Close to 10,278 laptops are reported lost every week at 36 of the largest U.S. airports, and 65% of those laptops are not reclaimed, the survey said. Around 2,000 laptops are recorded lost at the medium-size airports, and 69% are not reclaimed. The institute conducted field surveys at 106 airports in 46 states and surveyed 864 business travelers. Neurologically Based Advice for Acquiring Risk Tolerance: Start EarlyA recent study published in the journal Neuron, as reported in Ars Technica, has particularly relevant conclusions for the entrepreneurial mind—both positive and negative. John Timmer reports in Ars Technica that “in the brain, neural activity associated with a novel choice occurred in an area identical to that activated when a known image triggered the expectation of a positive result. In essence, the test subjects chose novelty because their brains—specifically, the right ventral striatum—interpreted it in a manner similar to a known positive result. To confirm that this was specific to novelty, the authors determined that the degree of activity in specific test subjects correlated with the frequency that they choose a previously

Microsoft innovation in Boston/CambridgeMicrosoft is making a big investment in innovation in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Boston Globe has a front page story about Microsoft's new Concept Development Center led by Reed Sturtevant. Reed was recruited by Ray Ozzie and his brother Jack to build the new lab.   The Boston Globe story says; Boston software legend Ray Ozzie replaced Bill Gates as Microsoft's chief software architect in 2006. Ozzie has been pushing for a transition from the desktop software that accounts for the bulk of its revenue to the Internet services that are the wave of the future. "Microsoft is making a big investment in Massachusetts," said Reed Sturtevant, 51, the director of the Boston Concept Development Center, who worked with Ozzie in the 19

Startup Advice from George Costanza: Do The OppositeThe Seinfeld fans out there will clearly recognize the reference to "the opposite" episode.  Basically, George tries to change his life by going against his natural instincts and doing the exact opposite.  [For the fanatics out there, I think this is Episode #86, aired May 19, 1994. Here are a couple of clips from the episode: George : Why did it all turn out like this for me? I had so much promise. I was personable, I was bright. Oh, maybe not academically speaking, but ... I was perceptive. I always know when someone's uncomfortable at a party. It became very clear to me sitting out there today, that every decision I've ever made, in my entire life, has been wrong. 20 Wrenches In The Software Startup MachineryThe following is a guest post by Jonathan Sapir of Silver Tree Systems.  I've added some editorial commentary (in italics) to help spark the discussion.  Enjoy.  I have had the misfortune of personally making every one of these mistakes during my years as a software entrepreneur.  I am currently reviewing a startup that seems to be trying really, really hard to make all of them in one go.  As a result, I decided to put this list together in the hopes of saving as many startups as possible from crashing in to the rocks of false hope and misguided thinking. 20 Ways To Put A Monkey-Wrench In Your Machinery 1.       You think that your product must be awesome because your buddies are telling you it is the greatest thing sinc

Startup Business Strategy For The Simple-MindedHere are the six simple steps for building a startup (in this case, a software startup). 1.  Figure out what to build.  You can do this by being brilliantly insightful (which you might be), or by just talking to some people.  Ask them questions.  Would you use this?  Does this solve a problem?  Would you pay for this?  Do you know anyone that would pay for this?  Are you going to roll your eyes and laugh out loud once I leave the room?  Are you going to tell you spouse this idea over dinner this evening to demonstrate that you indeed do have a sense of humor? 2.  Build something.  It doesn't have to be the world-changing thing you devised in step 1, but a close enough approximation.  It should do at least one useful thi

Taking The Leap: Don't Just Be A WannabepreneurChances are, if you're reading this article, you are either involved in a startup already, or looking to be involved in one. This article is for the folks in the latter category, the "wannabepreneurs".  The ones that have always wanted to be entrepreneurs, but haven't quite gotten around to it.  The folks still slogging it away in BigCo land waiting for the "right" entrepreneurial opportunity to come along. Here's my advice:  Stop Waiting! If you've got a passion for startups, you need to be in a startup.  Either run with the best idea you have and start your own thing (even if the idea sort of sucks), or join the best people you know that are already doing something.  Just get out of the daily slog that is most big businesses.

7 Uncannily Obvious Lessons From A Product LaunchA few days ago, my startup HubSpot, launched a new app called Press Release Grader. It's not our core product, but a free tool for marketers and PR folks to analyze a press release and provide suggestions. The launch has gone exceptionally well for us (and by that, I mean, the uptake in the community is much, much better than we were expecting). Would put some stats here, but it'd seem a bit like bragging and the focus of this article is not on press release grader or its specific results, but things I learned from putting it out there. Has The Bubble Burst? The Four Stages of BubblenessDon Dodge posted an interesting article recently on his blog titled "Web 2.0 = Bubble 2.0". The part that really caught my interest are the four "stages" of a bubble that he describes. Here's a quick summary: Stage 1: The smart money declares we are not in a bubble. Stage 2: People agree that we're in a bubble, but declare that there's still a year or two left to make real money. Stage 3: The bubble has actually burst, but people declare it is just a "temporary setback". Stage 4: Everyone recognizes and agrees that the bubble has burst, and life will never be the same. Don believes we're well into Stage 2 of the cycle this time around. I sort of agree, but think we're getting really, really close to being in Stage 3 -- if w

Why Raising VC Funding Does Not Equal SuccessMy startup, HubSpot (which provides online marketing for small business) recently released the news that it has closed a Series B round of VC funding of $12 million, bringing our total capital raised to over $17 million. In response to this news, I received many messages from friends and colleagues congratulating me on my success. To all of those well-wishers, thanks! It is indeed an exciting time and I'm thrilled to have hit this milestone. However... Raising VC Funding <> Success Getting a round of funding from venture capitalists is not really "success". Sure, it provides resources to build a great company, but it's not success. Sure, it demonstrates that some really smart people think the opportunity is big enough to inv

Insanity? Why A Bootstrap Entrepreneur Raised $17 Million in Venture FundingIf you've been following OnStartups.com for any period of time, you likely know that I'm not a big advocate of startup founders going out and trying to raise venture funding in the early stages. My argument boils down to two things: 1) Most folks don't need venture funding in the early stages 2) the odds of first-time entrepreneurs actually raising VC is pretty low. Oh, and 3) it's one of the least fun activities an entrepreneur can take. Raising funding is often harder than building a product/business -- and much less fun! So, given my general disposition, it will come as a surprise to many that know me that my startup, HubSpot, announced today that it has closed a Series B round of funding of $12 million. This is in addi

Scalable Funding: Can Venture Capital Be More Like Amazon EC2?I'm becoming an increasingly big fan of infrastructure services like Amazon's EC2 and S3. The reason is simple: You pay for what you need at around the time that you need it. This is the point I made when recently interviewed by Erica Naoone of MIT Technology Review in an article aptly and succinctly titled "Cheap Infrastructure". In the interview I was my usual, highly opinionated self, but this particular statement that made it into the article jumped out at me: "There's no correlation between the amount of money an entrepreneur actually needs and the money a venture capitalist puts into the business." Of course, there are some qualifiers here: I'm talking about software companies and I'm talking about the Series A investm

The ideal way to implement open source is to ensure you have a solid partner to implement and support your open source installation. UpSellit’s SMARTsales Agent does not appear as an avatar, but rather a chat box. Most of the traditional chat (no face) out there is delivered by live chat agents in a customer service role. Not only is this a large expense for businesses, but also not the most cost-effective. Between chat agents’ poor spelling and grammar, sub-par reading comprehension skills and tendency to be slow or worse yet idle the experience is not ideal.
