Neutered SEOs, PPC, Google Sheep, & Paid Links Gone UndergroundPPC and organic search alike serve classic functions in the marketing mix. However Google is effectually forcing many advertisers into buying more AdWords PPC by systematically setting out to neuter SEOs, who are increasingly going underground. We all know Google’s been eviscerating organic paid link-building tactics which historically have been a vital component of [...]

The World's Longest On-Going Circular DebateQuestion for the Week of June 28th, 2008 What don't you trust about SEO (search engine optimization)? ... and why? Someone at Linkedin asked this questions AGAIN! www.linkedin.com/answers/marketing-sales/advertising-promotion/internet-marketing/MAR_ADP_INM/257887-517478?split_page=2 For 11 years I've seen this single question and ensuing circular debate asked over and over and over and always with the exact same outcome. No winners on either side of the argument. Surely I can't be the only one who wonders why there is NEVER an answer if the same questions gets asked again and again. If  any of us truly longed for logic and the rule of reason to dictate the direction of our industry going forward as a profession, then doesn't it seem st

Kudos to SEO-ScoopI meant to say something about this quite sometime back and it just slipped my mind but I believe a little cyber pat on the back is in order for Donna Fontenot and SEO-Scoop http://www.seo-scoop.com I guess i first realized that Donna was a notch above most SEO bloggers when i realized the effort she put in to publish the post Hundreds of SEO Interviews. http://www.seo-scoop.com/2006/08/25/75-seo-interviews/ That list was not scraped or borrowed. That was an original idea that she was willing to put her own elbow grease to and offered up a valuable resource to the online marketing community and the web in general. I've always believed she deserved a LOT more credit for that effort than she ever got and I feel remiss in not mentioning it

SEO IS DEAD --- Or Is It?Question for the Week of June 15th, 2008 Hey guru, there is a lot of controversy over at sphinn about whether or not SEO is dead. What do you think? Is seo history? ***************************************** I assume you are referring to the sphinn post at http://sphinn.com/story/52207. I followed that to the article at Search Engine Journal http://www.searchenginejournal.com/false-prophecy-onsite-seo-will-be-history/7092/  and then that lead me to the post at Marketing Pilgrim by Asif Anwar named 13 Prophecies of Internet Marketing The first prophecy in the list of 13 was titled Prophecy #1: Onsite Search Engine Optimization (SEO) will be History. As to be expected this set off the heated round of posts at Sphinn. Persona

What's the Point of Blogging Anyway? What's the Point of Blogging Anyway? I probably ask myself that question just about every time I sit down and get ready to write a post. Most of the time I'm so busy I feel like a one-eyed dog in a sausage factory and I don't know which way to turn. Most days it's very difficult to stop the whirlwind that is an SEO's life and focus on a single topic long enough to write something that I feel offers something useful, informative, educational or at least entertaining. From the first day I slid in an AOL disc that I got in the mail, (now those guys knew how to spam!), and found out what a chat room was, I knew that once you hit that enter button that you were no longer in control of your own words. I knew you couldn't take back anythin

What Are the Important Indicators to Watch Early On?Question for the Week of May 29th, 2008 I had a drive by comment on my last post today and I felt that it is a good enough question that it should be a topic and not just a reply. It is something that I feel doesn’t get discussed nearly enough in the seo community so this is my chance to do more than just complain about it. This comment was made in reference to my last post about an interview I gave last week.  Interview is here Eric Enge @ Stone Temple And the post is here Page Rank - where it's been and where it's going Here’s the question: >Execute the strategy and watch the numbers.< It occurs to me that at the heart of watching the numbers is the need to demonstrate to the client a positive return on investm

Page Rank - where it's been and where it's goingI was honored this past week when I was asked for an interview by Eric Enge www.stonetemple.com/blog/.  I did my best to try add value to Eric’s site and good name as a token of my appreciation and I certainly wouldn’t want to do anything to steal his thunder. However I realize that his readers aren’t necessarily my readers and there was one question in particular that I wanted to make sure and share with my readers. So I hope I’m not breaking any kind of secret blogger’s code of etiquette by posting one out of the 10 questions I answered for Eric. If I am I do apologize. How Many Keywords Should Your SEO Be Targetting?Question for the Week of May 12th, 2008 Yesterday I had a question from a client asking how many keywords we will target for each project. It reminded me that out of all the questions I get that illustrate a need for better understanding of how an SEO process works, this is one of the top 5. I think of all the things I could discuss to the benefit of my readers, answering this question will do the most good for the most people with the least words spent. So, here is the question and my response in italics. ************************************* We would like to target at least 25 keywords for each client.  When I first spoke with you Guru, this is how I understood it and that is how we were doing it with our previous SEO comp

Back In The USAI’m back in the land of the free and the home of the brave. And I’m already missing Samosas and Chana Puri. It is a very strange thing living on two continents. After spending 7 months of the last 10 in India, and the fact that is where my business is now, my head seems a bit confused as to where home is and where I’m visiting.  Oddly enough, I feel as out-of-place in Oklahoma City now as I felt my first month in Ahmedabad. It doesn’t help that our business there is growing very fast and the excitement is taking hold and I want to be there to enjoy it. It also doesn’t help that I have now become addicted to chana puri and finding Punjabi food in Oklahoma is about as easy as finding a street address in India.  I’ll

What To Do When You Run Out of Link Building IdeasQuestion for the Week of April 25th, 2008 The question came up over at Web Pro World about what to do when you run out of link building ideas. Among the usual comments about writing articles and news release was this from Peter (IMC): "Link building is just a technical term that shouldn't be a real objective."                                                                                                                                    He goes on to say that people should concentrate on marketing and forget link building. That may be fine in the long run, but some sites can't wait that long. Is

Why SEO Ethical Standards Won't Work.Question for the Week of April 20th, 2008 There is a discussion over at WebProWorld about setting standards for SEO. http://www.webproworld.com/search-engine-optimization-forum/68100-do-we-need-search-engine-optimization-standards.html What are you views on this, O, Mighty Guru? (I think I know, but could you tell us anyway?) ******************************************** There can be no standards set for SEO anymore than there could be standards set for lawyers calling themselves, JO's, (judge optimizers), or mechanics calling themselves RO's (road optimizers), chefs calling themselves TO's (tableware optimizers), or carpenters calling themselves HO's, (hammer optimizers) or ------I could go on for a long time but I think

SEO PlagiarismOver the past few weeks, I've had a few run-ins with plagiarism in various forms and thought I'd take the opportunity to have a little rant about it. My hope is that by discussing it, people will become more educated about the issue and perhaps it will become a little less rampant online.

What Is Social MediaSo what the heck IS social media? If you don't know the answer to that question, this SlideShare presentation will do a good job answering it for you. This presentation was created by Marta Kagan, a self acclaimed social media evangelist + online marketing pro. Special thanks to her for uploading this to SlideShare and allowing people to pass it along. I've gone through most of the presentation myself and although I already had a good idea as to what Social Media was all about, this presentation gives you a ton of numbers to think about and it just makes sense. Akismet Might Have Some Serious Competition on Their HandsAutomattic’s Akismet has been long known as the king of spam detection. It has been ported to multiple content management systems like WordPress, Drupal, MovableType, phpBB, Joomla, b2evolution, Geeklog, and many more. It is, hands down, one of the most popular solutions to handle all this spam, but now there is something else ready to take on the likes of Akismet. It, perhaps, might even be more effective than Akismet. Defensio, a comment spam detection system which claims 99.77% accuracy, is really striving to become serious competition to Akismet. Not only that, but the development team aims to pick up where Akismet has left off. The system improves upon what Akismet has built in many ways: the system ranks comments by "spaminess," it

What Makes A Problogger?First, a little history. I've been blogging since 2006 back when a project called EFx2 was being developed. EFx2 was like the WordPress.com before I knew of WordPress. I used the blog as a way to share my thoughts, ideas and opinions on things that occurred in my personal life as well as what was going on in the world of technology and the web. Back in June of 2007, I decided to jump off the subdomain bandwagon and start blogging seriously on my own domain. Thus, jeffro2pt0.com was born. Since the launch of my own domain, I've written short posts, long posts, engaging posts, list posts, and all sorts of other posts. I blogged for one year as an experiment to see what would happen. As luck would have it, the way I wrote about WordPress topic

Suggestions On When To Turn Off CommentsRonald Huereca of the Readers Appreciation Project brought up a point in which I haven't thought about before and that is when to turn off comments. In his post, Ronald mentions that it is probably a good idea to turn off comments when: You're on vacation You're done with blogging You'd rather concentrate on writing You don't ever respond You don't ever have time Legal Issues I'd like to add on to this list with a few of my own. Spam filter doesn't work Receiving hateful comments on a regular basis Personally, the way I have Akismet set up on my WordPress blog, I don't think I'll ever have to worry about a ton of spam getting through. However, I would much rather have the commenting system disabled on my blog rather than coming back fro

AdSense Referrals Bites The DustGoogle is making some big news today as they have announced that they will be retiring their AdSense referrals program at the end of August and will be substituting it for the Doubleclick Performics Affiliate Network. The Google Affiliate Network works in a similar fashion to the AdSense Referrals program in that, it enables publishers to apply for advertiser programs and get paid based on advertiser defined actions, instead of clicks or impressions. Also, if you have less than three AdSense content units on a page, you can replace the referral ad units with the standard AdSense for content ad units. Since the current program will be retiring at the end of August, Google is recommending you take the following steps: Remove the referral cod

A Blogging Proclamation: Quality Content WinsIt has only been within this current year when I realized a serious difference in the way I was generating traffic for my blogs. I realized that it is no longer any use to me to simply link to great articles. It is an epic waste of time. I am no longer concerning myself with posting frequency on my own blogs; instead, I will be focusing on creating only quality content. It doesn't matter if it requires one day or one week, I will only publish original and quality content. There are reasons for this: Originality—original content is content that others talk about. When you look at news sites, social sites, etc., they are buzzing with original content. Original content generates interest by readers. We desire this originality, and we eat it

This series will tackle a number of different subjects related to blogging and will offer up tips, suggestions and tactics to accomplish a specific goal. Today's goal, building reader participation. When I started blogging, it took quite awhile before people would stop by to simply leave a comment. This seems to happen with every blogger. At the beginning, it's like yelling down an echo chamber. Getting people to comment can be a frustrating task as you can't control whether someone spends the time to do so or not. Outside of commenting, there are other ways in which you could encourage participation which we'll cover later in this article.

Name That Blog CategoryAfter the defining a blog post was published, a commenter by the name of SierraK came up with an interesting idea. Actually I just came up with a completely random idea..Maybe there should be a different word for each kind of blog. Like tech blogs could have a word, self-help a different word, photography another, etc. so that rather than debate whether its a blog or a website we could discuss whether it is in the right category lol. The problem would be educating on what each of the different words stood for rather than what a general word "blog" stood for...and who would come up with the words? I've seen this in action already with technology blogs being called Techlogs while Photography blogs are called Photoblogs. I thought I would open

Good SEO Client CommunicationsFollowing up the previous post about SEO reporting to clients, another major part of over-delivering to clients is how you communicate with them. Every time you send something to a client, you need to be crystal clear on the following two points... First, you need to tell them what you are sending them and why. This should go without saying, however, all too often someone new to the business of working with clients will send out a document to a client without being clear about what it is. If you are sending a keyword universe to show the client some early research and you are not clear about what this is, they will be confused. Confused clients are a bad thing; they get cranky quickly. Be clear; explain what you are sending and why yo

Under Promise, Over DeliverProbably one of the best pieces of advice I can give for anyone selling in any field, especially SEO, is to always under promise and then over deliver. A very quick way to impress a client, ensure client retention, and promote referrals from them is to promise them a mule and give them a stallion. This isn't to say sell yourself short, however, when you are selling SEO, there are many variables that you cannot foresee. Make sure the client is well aware that ranking for their keywords might be difficult and take some time. If/when you start ranking and send a lot of traffic much more quickly than promised, the client will be thrilled. Don't just use this advice on the initial sell. Continue to set expectations below what you think

Anatomy of an SEO CrisisOne of my duties at ACCM 2008 in Orlando was to host a table at "Lunch with the Experts". The table's stated topic was one Netconcepts specializes in -- SEO for large-scale ecommerce sites. Most of the table's discussion revolved around two representatives from a company in a true SEO crisis. Their product pages were invisible in search engines, and their ancient and outdated CMS was about as search-unfriendly as possible -- it even used frames! To add insult to injury, the people who understood that the website had problems were having a great deal of trouble convincing management to redesign the company site. So the first element of the crisis is the technology. The site in its present condition is unable to generate any natural search e

ACCM 2008: Improving Conversion from SEM TrafficAnother great search marketing session at ACCM 2008 was "Conversion is your secret weapon," given by Wine Enthusiast's VP of marketing Glenn Edelman and The Rimm-Kaufman Group's Larry Becker. The first part of the session concentrated on in-depth ways of determining advertising ROI and effectiveness. The general advice that Web marketers get on this subject can be pretty lightweight, but these guys gave some really great advice: Track at both the keyword and the ad level Pay as close attention to your organic search results as you do to your PPC results Choose your tracking technology carefully; if possible, use multiple redundant solutions The second half of the session concentrated on both landing page design and general site design -

ACCM 2008: Getting More out of PPCThe second search marketing intensive session at ACCM 2008 was all about how to maximize your PPC search engine marketing efforts. The speakers were Ryan Gibson of the Rimm-Kaufman Group and Glenn Edelman, VP of marketing at The Wine Enthusiast. Much of the initial advice covered the basics of keyword research and calculating ROI, but there was also a wealth of detail in the presentation that you don't usually hear in a typical PPC presentation. For instance, many people know that you have to track ad performance to determine the ROI sweet spot, but how far do you usually go with it? Do you track seasonality? Do you know the differences in ad performance according to day of the week? It's this kind of analysis that can lead you to greater

ACCM 2008: Reputation Management in the SERPsIf you haven't had to deal with an online reputation management issue in the SERPs (search engine results pages) yourself, you probably know someone who has. Reputation management sounds like a vague marketing term, but it's a burgeoning new area of SEO that encompasses monitoring what people are saying about you on the Web, combating negative or inaccurate information, influencing the sites you have control and sway over, and affecting sites' search rankings to put your best foot forward in the SERPs. Maybe a few years ago you could have argued that the only companies that needed to deal with this issue are the ones that have a significant Web presence, but in this day and age, even mostly offline businesses have to deal with negative Inte

Stop Wasting Your ALT Attributes and Make them Work for Youby Stoney deGeyter When providing SEO advice on the topic of website design, we often warn against placing important content into images. This is because search engines can't read images like a person can. To them, an image with text is just an image. They really have no idea what the image is or if, in fact, it says anything at all. So when optimizing sites, anytime we are dealing with keyword optimized content, we want to make sure it's standard HTML text. This includes headers, benefit lits, and even normal body copy. While the search engines can't read actual images, they can read what we say about the image. This information can be gleaned a few different ways: Image file name (image1234.jpg vs. mustang-gt.jpg) Text immediate

4 Tips to Making Your Proprietary CMS Search Friendlyby Manoj Jasra There are often cases where a business will choose to develop a custom content management system (CMS) rather than buying something off the shelf. I have some first hand experience building my own content management system and can testify that if it's implemented corrrectly it will rank as well as any commercial CMS powered website. The key to a developing a good CMS is to first understand the purpose of your website (requirements) and secondly to design the framework (database, business logic, GUI) to support it. There are also some fundamental SEO related guidelines you should build into your proprietary CMS if you hope to rank well in the search engines.   Unique Meta Tags: Each page on your website should allow f

While it's impossible to monitor every venue showcasing public opinion and reviews, you can work to protect your reputation by registering your known brand/name with as many social media, forums, and discussion sites as you can, especially the popular ones in your niche. Why? Well anyone can register any name at a social media site and pass themselves off as you. Or just register the same name and tie it up so you can't.
