Ferrari Challenge: Trofeo PirelliIs this all torque and no trousers?. The real-life Ferrari Challenge features rotund men getting hot and bothered in cars they paid the equivalent of 36,363 pints of Carling down the Goblin for. I know what I'd rather do. I'd rather get drunk and then attempt to play Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli on my PS3.Click here to read the full article

Destructoid Destructoid

The day EA nearly started a war, or how to upset 60% of Northern IrelandEA Sports recently committed a worrying faux-pas by playing the wrong national anthem for Northern Ireland in its FIFA 2008 game. Instead of God Save the Queen, Electronic Arts accidentally used the Republic of Ireland anthem, the Soldier's Song. A war, you say? If you're not aware of Ireland's history of violence and conflict (as EA apparently isn't), then you might find it hard to believe that those stereotypical images of cheeky Irish rogues with a pot of gold and a spring in their step are actually all out to murder each other with bombs and rifles. There has been death over far less than what Electronic Arts did. Northern Ireland only very recently achieved peace, but it's safe to surmise that the situation will still be tender over t

First footage of Wario Land: Shake It! makes me a happy shark I had mixed feelings when Wario Land: Shake It! was first announced for the Wii. The last DS Wario adventure title was such garbage that I feared Nintendo would continue to ruin one of my favorite characters of all time. Thanks to GoNintendo, though, my fears have been put to rest.   The official Japanese Web site for Wario Land: Shake It! just opened up and contains a bunch of stuff that I can’t read nor understand. Not that it matters, as there are two videos on the site that pretty much explain it all.  RawMeatCowboy from GoNintendo graciously put the videos up on YouTube, one of the gameplay and one of the prologue to the story of Shake It!   Watching the gameplay trailer above just makes me think of the original GameBoy games,

Midnight Club: Los Angeles runs into a delayRockstar San Diego has announced that their upcoming racer for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, needs a bit more maintenance under the hood before it’s ready to peel out onto store shelves. Accordingly, the previous September 9 release date has now been moved back to October 7.The delay should hopefully mean further improvements, as Rockstar promises a complete lack of load times as you drive around their virtual representation of LA at speeds that will likely far exceed the posted speed limits. Such news is certainly good to hear, as nothing kills my racing mood more than getting a loading screen seconds before crossing the finish line, or, as is much more likely in my case, crashing into the wall that’s next

If this Mercenaries 2 video doesn't sell you on the game, nothing willIf this latest video for Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is anything to go by, Pandemic's decision to delay the game was a brilliant one. Hit the play button to catch a glimpse of the fun to be had in Mercenaries 2 as lead designer Scott Warner takes us through one of the game's missions using three different mercenaries, each with their own unique way of completing the objective.Besides the seemingly repetitious quick time events used during the hijacking sequences, there was nothing shown in the video that didn't A) make Mercs 2 look like pure, unadulterated fun and B) make me want to get my hands on the game immediately. For the unedited footage of each character's play-through, hit up the game's official site.

Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger got its FPS in my RTSI like strategy games. I mean really like them. There’s just something about building structures and sending tiny units to their deaths that can keep me captivated for hours on end. Maybe that just means I have all the makings of a power-mad infrastructurally-concerned dictator; the kind of power-mad infrastructurally-concerned dictator that’s really helpful to have on your side in 2v2 matches. I also like shooting stuff, but hey, what power-mad infrastructurally-concerned dictator in training doesn’t? It is for these two reasons that SouthPeak Games has caught my attention with the announcement of their new game, Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger, which promises to blend together both genres: very much like a tasty, virtual, peanu

Teenager BURNS a Pac-Man into his fleshThis is one of those stories you can file under "JESUS TITTING CHRIST!" A teenage boy has used a laser-etching machine to "brand" himself with an image of Pac-Man, burning the iconic arcade character into his skin. The self-scourging Pac-Man fan modified an industrial etching machine to perform the dangerous deed, disabling its safety mechanism with a die and a magnet. He then used its searing hot laser to scar the image into his arm. He also "tattooed" a Space Invader on the arm and a robot on his hand, one that looks suspiciously like a relative of our very own Mr. Destructoid. Naturally, as with all young men who do stupid things, he filmed his escapades, and the video is embedded after the jump. Buy this awesome Herbie Hancock-signed Rock Band bundle, help a good causeSure, maybe you already own Rock Band. But is it signed by Grammy award-winning jazz musician Herbie Hancock? Yeah, I didn't think so; your copy of Rock Band fails. While rubbing elbows with celebs at this year's Grammy awards, Harmonix had the pleasure of playing their game with the legend (and the Pussycat Dolls, from what I understand, although I may have just dreamed that). Thinking on their feet, they had Hancock and some of his musician buddies sign a special edition Xbox 360 bundle. They refused to give it to me; death threats mean nothing to the folks who put God damned "Green Grass and High Tides" in their last game. The bundle was put up on eBay, however, and the proceeds go to a good cause -- the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS

Fable 2 official site updates and includes loreToday, the official Fable 2 site was completely revamped. Other than a more streamlined look, a new section called “Tales of Albion” was added. Tales of Albion will be a three-part saga of the Fable universe. The first part of the new series is entitled “Fragments of the Old Kingdom,” which explains the creation and subsequent destruction of Albion. The story begins when three extraordinarily powerful people arise from something called the Void. After busting out of it, they decide that they want to call themselves "the Court" and nab some land. Unfortunately for the denizens of Albion, they lived in the closest town around. At first, the citizens resist the would-be conquerors’ attempts at submission, but after three separate str

Japanese Game Schools: Two Points Of View?Earlier this week, sister GSW site GameCareerGuide.com posted a second story about life at a Japanese game school, as written by Andrea Rubenstein, who "...had two recent goals in life: to become a fluent Japanese speaker and to find a game development school that would accept her somewhere in Japan." The first GCG story on the subject tackled her successful attempts to get into HAL, and this new one discusses day to day life at the Osaka-based game academy. In any case, the piece itself is pretty darn interesting in terms of educating about what goes on at one of these Japanese game schools - it seems pretty different to many North American game courses, at least. But even more interesting is a comment on the Gamasutra story precis from

In this editorial, he delves into the role of video game cutscenes - not from a standpoint of structural appropriateness, as is often discussed, but from a narrative and cinematic point of view.] The often discussed "problem" of the cutscene, at least in so far as it relates to the ongoing debate about interruption of interactivity and narrative exposition, rather than being a problem of structural functionality, appears instead to be a question on the propriety of decisions made by designers regarding issues of perspective relatively easily resolved in the framework of editing, rhythm, and aesthetic expression. Thankfully today, I was able to.  As usual, the PC version of the box art stands out above the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions because like other titles, the cover is not over run with logos etc. ---Related Articles at Gaming Today:Dead Space - New Trailer is Deliciously CreepyCreepiness Abounds in New Screens for Dead SpaceJapan’s Metal Gear Solid 4 Box Art RocksEA Annouces Dead SpaceMetroid Prime 3: Corruption Box Art Cover

Guitar Hero: On Tour Sets Activision North American Retail Sales RecordActivision announced today that Guitar Hero : On Tour for the DS has sold in excess of 300,000 units in North America in the first seven days since its launch, making it the largest North American launch for the Nintendo DS in the company’s history by more than a factor of eight. In addition, Guitar Hero: On Tour’s performance ranks it as one of Activision’s top 5 best-selling launches of any title on any platform in the company’s history. Diablo III: Out with the PK - In with the PvPThanks to the folks over at VG247, we have learned that over on the WoW forums Bashiok (Blizzard-type person) has posted the following information in regards to the PK vs PvP discussion going on in the Diablo III thread. Turns out, Pk is out and PvP is in: “We’re - in general - not big fans of griefing for any game. It’s really only “fun” for one person, and that definition of fun isn’t generally something we’re going to want to encourage. It’s far more positive to encourage and support meaningful and skillful options and systems within a game, than a mechanic for people to instantly turn against one another for no meaningful gameplay reasons. I definitely remember running with my friends, and someone toggles it, and bam eve

No PS3 Trophies for Call of Duty 4 Says Infinity WardHere is bit of disappointing news for those who play CoD4 on their PS3. Infinity Ward has no plans to go back and add trophies to the game. Pulled straight from the Infinity Ward forum, Rob Bowling had this to say regarding the situation: Hey Everyone - With the latest Playstation 3 firmware now available, I see a lot of questions regarding how it effects Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. At this time, we have no plans to patch in Trophy support for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the PS3. Much like DualShock rumble addition to the PS3, the support for these new features have come much to late for us to add it to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare due to our current production schedule. We would have loved to have these in the game at launch i

Harmonix: Games Help People Understand Music; Rock Band 2 - No User Created MusicRecently, GamesIndustry.biz had a nice chat with Chris Foster, the senior designer for Harmonix. During the interview, Chris talked about how he feels that the interactivity in the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games immerses players more in the music than just by listening to them via the radio or other forms of media. Being a musician himself, Chris is right on the money with that sentiment in my opinion. What I found interesting as a musician is that when you play the songs, from the simple art of the note patterns following the music and when you hear the occasion notes drop out, you’re actually sort of understanding the music from the inside. It’s not talked about a lot in terms of the games, but you’re experiencing the music like yo

Gears of War 2 Screenshot Extravaganza: Part One: CampaignMicrosoft and Epic released so many screenshots for Gears of War 2 today that if I were to put them all in one post, the thin silver cord connecting us to the Prime Material Plane would snap and all we know would be lost to us as we floated around in the different Astral realms - that or the Matrix would collapse, or any other sort of nerdy reference to all hell breaking loose. Therefore, my fellow gamers, I have decided to break these up into different posts so as not to wreak havoc or to put it bluntly, get called out by my boss for making a “monster” post. Raven Squad to marry RTS, FPS this fallFiled under: PC, Microsoft Xbox 360, First Person Shooters, Strategy Hey, you got real-time strategy in our first-person shooter! That's the mantra we could be chanting this fall when SouthPeak and Evolved Games partner to release Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger, a new RTS/FPS hybrid, for the Xbox 360 and PC. Developed by Budapest, Hungary outfit, Atomic Motion, the game will allow players to swap between both real-time strategy and first-person shooter gameplay as they take control of two mercenary squads fighting their way out of the Amazon, the first shots of which can be seen below. However, as interesting as the mash-up sounds, there is an old saying about doing one thing, and doing it well, and we can't help but feel that Raven S

Peter Moore explains EA Sports' PC snubFiled under: PC, Sports PC sports gamers are somewhat justifiably unhappy with Peter Moore right now. Earlier this year, the EA Sports executive announced that Madden and many other EA Sports games won't be coming to the PC market this year. But wait, you didn't give him a chance to explain! Well, actually, you did, and he did, but today Moore went into more detail about his division's scaled back PC support. A summary of the reasoning behind the decision: PC sports gamers are gravitating to consoles. The PC sports gaming market is gravitating to a downloadable model rather than a "packaged" model. The PC versions of EA Sports games aren't getting a good enough return on investment. You PC gamers just pirate everything anyw

Take for instance the above video. What you see in it is, in fact, GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64 running on a Wii with the "Homebrew Channel" installed. The poster of the video states that he was able to get the game ROM working with the emulator used by the Virtual Console version of Sin & Punishment. He gives no details on how he managed the feat, mentioning only that the game works "for the most part" with occasional slowdown and a broken borked save system. Hopefully Nintendo will see this video and, rather than simply order it pulled offline, realize just how much people really want a proper Virtual Console release o

No player-created tracks for Rock Band 2Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Rhythm Guitar Hero World Tour is going to let players make their own songs, so it only stands to reason that Rock Band 2 will as well, right? He adds that Harmonix is "taking a radically different approach" to player-created tracks - presumably he means from the way Guitar Hero World Tour dev Neversoft is handling it - and will "take more time to do it." Five Games That Matter In Hideo Kojima's Life [Metal Gear Solid]Five games that made an impact on the life of Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima? According to the famed game designer: • Super Mario Bros. • Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken • Xevious • Another World • Metal Gear Solid This list comes from a Yomiuri Newspaper article called "All About Kojima Hideo" dated June 11th. We haven't seen the full article (only that picture we found on a Yomiuri blog), and the English translation of Yomiuri article glosses over these five games and what they mean to him. EA Sports Very Sorry For Irish Anthem Screw-Up [EA Sports]While it's calmed down a lot over the past decade, Northern Ireland is still a reasonably sensitive place politically. Not the kind of place you'll be dodging pub bombs anymmore, granted, but still not the kind of place you want to make any cultural faux pas, either. So EA Sports understandably regret, and are very sorry, that they included the wrong national anthem for the Northern Irish team in their Euro 2008 football title. See, before each match, the anthems of both teams are played. Being a part of the United Kingdom, Northern Irelands' anthem is, of course, God Save The Queen. EA Sports, however, included The Soldiers Song. National anthem of the Republic of Ireland (or, as most people know it as, just plain old Ireland). As in, the

360 Rock Band Guitars Work With GH: Aerosmith [Update] [Guitar Hero]Not that this will matter to any of you on a practical level, since we pray you won't actually pick up a copy of Guitar Hero Aerosmith, but it's good news on principle. Seems that Rock Band controllers will work with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, with the G4TV team testing the 360 version and finding that all functions - including the whammy bar and star power - are up and running. Seeing as the problem was always at Activision's end (GH controllers would work with Harmonix's Rock Band), have they swallowed their pride and opened up the music controller market? Appears so, at least for 360 owners. Let's just hope this carries on into Guitar Hero World Tour, where it might actually matter. 'Rock Band' Guitar Work With 'GH: Aerosmith' [G4TV] UPDATE

Ban this sick filth!: Sega ad is hilariously sexualVia Destructoid: "Most of Sega's 16-bit-era advertising either a.) touted its blast processing power or b.) shamelessly ripped on Nintendo in a nasty smear campaign. Everyone remembers the classic "Genesis does what Nintendon't" phrase, and I think that slogan is particularly applicable for this ad, too: Nintendo isn't unnecessarily sexual. Quite frankly, I'm not sure what kind of message Sega is trying to send here. I mean, I understand the pun, but shouldn't games get easier as you play them more often? Of course, that little dose of common sense doesn't quite fit into the joystick-boner metaphor they've got going."

Latest PS3 Firmware Update Requires Hard Disk Wipe to FixAn anonymous reader writes "Earlier today Sony launched firmware V2.40 for the PS3 which is mandatory for online play. To my horror after installing the update my console wouldn't boot, and this appears to be a not uncommon problem affecting all ages and models of PS3s. Although there is rampant fanboy denial over at the official Playstation forums, the Kotaku article details the issue and has a suggested solution if you don't mind yanking your PS3's hard drive."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Dungeons and DesktopsAeonite writes "Dungeons and Desktops: The History of Computer Role-playing Games chronicles the rise and fall of the Computer RPG industry, from Akalabeth to Zelda and everything in between. While the bulk of the book is devoted to the genre's 'Golden Age' in the late '80s and early '90s, author Matt Barton explores the entire history of CRPGs, from their origins in the mid '70s to the very recent past. While not entirely comprehensive, the book covers not only the major players and award-winners, but also dozens of obscure 'also-ran' as well as notable games in related genres." FAS released Immune Attack, an educational video game designed to teach immunology to AP level high school students and combines the most current research on teaching methodologies with a 3D first-person shooter game. OCZ's Brain Wave Interface Headband ReviewedJ. Dzhugashvili writes "Could you control a game using your jaw muscles, eye movements, and brain waves? OCZ designed its futuristic Neural Impulse Actuator controller for that very purpose, and it claims the device lets players shorten their response times and interact with games more naturally. But is it really all it's cracked up to be? The Tech Report took the NIA for a spin in order to answer that question, and it made some interesting discoveries along the way. The verdict is that the NIA works (mostly) as advertised, but getting used to it can take enough dedication and perseverance to put off many prospective users."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Grand OGL Wiki Seeks to Publish RPG Book Back-StockZonk pointed out an interesting story over at The Gamer Dome that details a new wiki project partnering with Mongoose Publishing to share the publishing company's back-stock for free. Titled "The Grand OGL Wiki," the new project seeks to create a repository for many out of print books that would otherwise be lost to the sands of time. "'If a volunteer (or volunteers - you might have to be some sort of maniac to go through all this material solo!) were to come forward and create a suitable web site, we would happily supply electronic versions of our D20 lines for translation of OGC to such a web site. We would be very free with the material permissible, allowing you to effectively cut and paste large chunks of 'fluff' text alongside the OGC.
