Mac Home Automation on your TV with Indigo and PlexPlex + Indigo + Harmony Remote = Home Automation Bliss Why do it? About a year ago, I decided to take the home automation plunge and sought out ways to automate my home's lighting, entertainment and HVAC systems. After doing a good deal of research, I concluded that the most cost-effective and flexible solution would be to utilitze Perceptive Automationís Indigo software and Smarthome's Insteon modules for the lighting and HVAC. Once I installed all the Insteon devices (which also included a garage door opener), I installed the Indigo software on an iMac in my study, connected the iMac to the Insteon adapter which plugs into the wall and my home automation dreams were off and running...

UK Folding Plug takes home design award, emerges in USB-infused flavorIt's far and away one of the most genius concepts we've seen in the past year, and we couldn't possibly be happier for one Min-Kyu Choi. Said designer, who recently graduated from the Royal College of Art, was recently showered with laud after the above-pictured Folding Plug nabbed the gold in the Brit Insurance Design contest. Unfortunately, we're still no closer to understanding when some moneyed manufacturer will pick this up and start producing it, but hopefully this prize will reinforce its awesomeness and catch someone's eye. In related news, we're also seeing for the first time a Folding Plug version with USB ports on the exterior, which would be just about perfect for UK-based gadget junkies. Here's hoping this dream doesn't die jus

Updated Archos 13 laptop to roll out next monthThis one looks to have largely gotten lost among the hubbub of CeBIT earlier this month, but it seems like Archos quietly announced a followup to its Archos 13 laptop, which is now set to debut sometime next month. Complete details are still a bit light unfortunately, but the revised model will sport that always desirably "classy look," along with an Atom D510, Windows 7 Home Premium for an OS and, presumably, a 13.3-inch display. No word on pricing just yet, but the original Archos 13 came in at an even $800. Updated Archos 13 laptop to roll out next month originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Mar 2010 17:06:00 EST. EVGA Classified SR-2 fits two Xeon CPUs for 12 cores, exemplifies overkillRemember EVGA's seven-GPU motherboard monstrosity, the W555? That experimental beast of a board just got declassified -- and given immediate launch orders. Under the new "Classified SR-2" callsign, the board's layout has hardly changed since CES (though the heatsinks certainly got a makeover) but the big news here is that each of its two CPU sockets will support that fancy new Intel processor. As you're well aware, two times six is twelve -- and since each of the Xeon 5600's cores can handle 12 threads -- you're looking at the basis for a 24-threaded powerhouse for mondo multitasking performance. Factor in enough slots for 4-way SLI, CrossFireX and 48GB of RAM, and it's not hard to wonder why the red-and-black HPTX (15- x 13.6-inches!) cre

Is Canada's iPod tax back? And if so, will BJ Snowden get her cut?We know, BJ Snowden is an American artist -- but since her song "In Canada" is probably on every iPod and computer up north, we have to wonder whether a proposed amendment to the Canadian Copyright act will help her finally get what's coming to her. The brainchild of the New Democratic Party's Charlie Angus, the bill would extend 1997's Private Copying Levy "to the next generation of devices that consumers are using for copying sound recordings for personal use." Proponents of the plan says that it ensures that artists get paid for their work -- essentially, the government wants you to pay upfront for the music you're likely to steal anyways by taxing your next digital audio player purchase. Of course, much about the plan doesn't make sense

Palm's AT&T launch pushed back to summer?Palm might be able to use a bit of good news right about now, but it looks like it may not be able to count on that coming from AT&T. As AllThingsD's John Paczkowski reports, Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek is now saying that Palm's still as yet unconfirmed launch on AT&T has been pushed back from its rumored April debut to June or July. What's more, Misek says that the delay isn't one of the usual variety, with AT&T reportedly citing a "long list of technical issues with the Pre and Pixi," and even going so far as to decrease its initial order size and "sharply reduce" its marketing budget for the launch. Of course, we are still taking about a rumored delay to an unconfirmed launch, but we should be hearing directly from Palm soon enou

That's exactly why we've been trying to get a Dell Vostro V13 in-hand since its launch a few months ago. Besides starting at $449 - our unit's configuration rings up at a higher $844 -- the less-than-an-inch-thick, aluminum clad Vostro V13 promises five hours of battery life and good-enough everyday performance. Sure, it was created for small business types, but its blend of style, performance and price had us convinced that it could be the best ULV laptop out there. Ah, but is it? We'll tell you everything you want to know after the jump in our full review. Gallery: Dell Vostro V13 reviewCont

Google issues statement on Nexus One sales, touts Android Market's 30,000 appsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Google_Issues_Statement_On_Nexus_One_Sales'; Numbers released by Flurry Analytics yesterday suggested that Google's Nexus One had sold around 135,000 units in 74 days (the same amount of time it took the iPhone to hit a million) -- not a staggering number by any measure. Now, we don't really have any way to assess the accuracy of Flurry's data, but we spoke with Google's team about a few things, and here's what they had to say. For starters, Google wanted to assert the idea that selling lots of a single handset isn't the company's primary goal, an idea which makes sense considering how many handsets are currently available with Android. In our conversation, Google actually called out the sales figures for

No copy-and-paste for Windows Phone 7 SeriesSection: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile Microsoft has decided to drop copy-and-paste support from Windows Phone 7 series. This might be all too familiar to some, as this has happened to the iPhone before, where Apple eventually had to bring back the feature. You’re probably thinking that Microsoft has somehow forgot to add this essential feature to the OS, but the guys over at Microsoft claim that it’s an intentional design decision. They claim that with the new “smart linking” feature, where you can easily dial a number or view the map of an address without having to copy over these text, it will replace the need for copy-and-paste. What about Office applications users, you ask? Well, Microsoft couldn’t care less about them

Nexus One also headed to Sprint, actual availability still unannouncedSection: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile The Nexus One was just announced for AT&T and Rogers yesterday, and today we have a little bit more in terms of upcoming availability. This time the announcement is coming from Sprint. The bad news is that as of now they have yet to announce a specific release date or pricing. Instead it was left as just that a date and price would be “announced soon.” The good news here is that the Nexus One will now be available on all four major US carriers. Additionally and similar to other carriers, it looks like the Sprint capable Nexus One will also be available only by way of the Google Store. Android now only 130,000 apps behind; reaches 30,000Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile Android continues to add apps at a high rate, yesterday Google officially confirmed 30,000 apps in it’s App Market for the Android operating system.  The number is a great deal higher than 10,000 confirmed back in September 2009, at the dawn of the Verizon Droid launch.  Clearly, having a phone on the nations biggest networks combined with a healthy does of advertising makes a difference. Last month, Google CEO Eric Schmidt mentioned Android phones are now selling at a 60,000 units a day clip.  Credit lots of models, on multiple networks and a free operating system that attracts users.  Just yesterday I received a mailing from AT&T showing off the Backflip

Fandango Mobile tickets go paperlessSection: Communications, Mobile, Web, Websites Fandango was one of the first companies to take movie ticket purchasing online. But now that the rest of the world has caught up with them, Fandango needed to take another step to get ahead of the game. So they came out with mobile tickets. Mobile phones have now become computers in their own right. In fact, if you want to find out what movies are playing in near-by there are more than a dozen applications in Apple’s app store, Android, and Palm that will do the trick. Some might even let you purchase tickets on the fly. But that still required you to wait in line with all of the other people to get your ticket. Fandango’s new mobile ticket program wants to solve that. The new program wi

Palm Pre Plus drops to $79.99 with Verizon Wireless, for a 24 hour saleSection: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile I really want a Palm Pre Plus, mostly due to the fact that I have had a review unit for a little while and have been digging it. But at the same time, and as much as I want one, I will not, repeat will not be paying $150 bucks for one. Given that I have been checking sites like Amazon, Wirefly and Verizon on an almost daily basis looking for price drops and waiting for the right time to buy. That time is not quite there for me just yet, however in my check of the day for today I found that Verizon has lowered the price down to $79.99. Its getting closer and closer to free. Also, the Wirefly price has remained at $39.99 and Amazon is a little lower, down to $29.99.

Sprint Overdrive 4G mobile hotspot rescues iPhone from AT&T hellI’ve been playing with the Sprint Overdrive 4G mobile hotspot device that the company sent me a few weeks ago, and I’ve gotta say, this thing has come in handy way more often than I thought it would. So much so, in fact, that I find it to be an essential tool and I carry it around in my left jacket pocket everywhere I go at this point, and charge it over USB when I am in the car driving somewhere. I’ll be giving a few examples of how the 4G Overdrive device has come in handy over the next few days, but I wanted to start with this one because I know so many iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS owners out there that cry to the heavens to be saved from the vile clutches of AT&T and their constant network FAIL.

SXSW 2010: From Hulu to Yahoo Widgets: Will the Internet Transform the TV?Rovi Chief Evangelist, Richard Bullwinkle had an afternoon session at SXSW 2010, dealing with convergence in the living room, “From Hulu To Yahoo Widgets: Will The Internet Transform The TV?” He started the session with the statement “It is difficult to upgrade your television because it is affixed to a wall.”  With computers, you can go to a new website, such as moving your social network from myspace.com to facebook.com.  With a mobile phone you can delete the location centric Loopt app and load Foursquare or Whrrl.  But your television cannot be updated and it is typically maintained by someone who put it on the wall. Nexus One now compatible with AT&T and Rogers Wireless!Looks like Google is finally ready to be serious with the Nexus One. As of today, the device is fully compatible with AT&T 3G, as well as Canada’s Rogers Wireless 3G bands. This account was used across all Microsoft platforms like Expedia and even shopping sites like Buy.com until it was ultimately removed from service in 2009.  Today, Facebook Connect allows their 300+ million users to log on and make comments on thousands of si

SXSW 2010: Playing with Place - Location-aware gamesKatheryn started off the session giving us geo location coordinates that only a machine would love.  Her followup to this was the context matters; our location around a place and who is around that space with us.  There is also excitement around discovery with geo.  An example could be geocache games which created back in the old old black and white LCD “latitude and longitude” GPS units and have worked their way into the App stores of the iPhone and Android handsets. Although location is in its infancy, Foursquare has opened their APIs and sites like gatsby.com are using location data + user preferences to send SMS messages to those who are in proximity with one another and could potentially benefit in meeting up in real life.  Wh

Panelists told stories that technology consultants must deal with every day through interactions with their clients.  Most of the stories told were a bit sensationalized around a client’s unrealistic expectations, mostly in regard to time to complete a project or disagreements of which technology to base a project on.  It seems that clients always want it faster, and typically more complex that it needs to be - something that is typically mutually exclusive. The 3D data set was calculated by comparing HiRISE's ultra-crispy images taken from two different points of view. The photos were matched using picture recognition software and converted in a 3D surface map using the position of the orbiter. The result is the most accurate terrain information on the surface of Mars yet. The best thing: All this data is being published by NASA for everyone to use. You can buy power strips that sense when the computer hooked up to them powers down and shut down the peripherals accordingly, but it didn't fit my need. Often times I would leave my computer on to do some task but I wanted to kill the power to the monitors easily and with a single motion. Top 10 Tips and Tools for Commuters [Lifehacker Top 10]U.S. commuters spend an average of 50 minutes in their car each day, and that leaves a lot of room for improvement. Adjust Your Mirrors for Better Vision Most people set up their car's mirrors in a way that keeps the edge of their own car in their vision, mostly to provide a sense of perspective. This limits the amount of "blind spot" coverage provided by your mirrors. Car and Driver suggests a new alignment technique supported by the Society of Automotive Engineers that covers more angles with your side and rear view mirrors. When we first highlighted this tip, several commenters asked what's wrong with just looking over your shoulder as you change lanes—technicall

The company also does customer satisfaction surveys in a number of other industries, and yesterday they released the 2009 Wireless Consumer Smartphone Satisfaction Survey and the 2009 Wireless Business Smartphone Satisfaction Survey. As you might not expect after all of the commenter griping we see about the iPhone, Apple nabbed the number one spot in customer satisfaction in both the consumer and business surveys. iPhone's Google Maps app now shows adsFiled under: Software, iPhone, iPod touchHave you noticed the new "Sponsored Link" search results showing up when you search in Google Maps on your iPhone? These new search results are ads. They're easy to pick out, because they use a customized icon instead of the typical push pin icon. While it's not surprising that Google is going to want to find every way possible to monetize its mapping service, it's still a little disconcerting to see these results popping up. Given this obvious new revenue stream, it makes us wonder whether Apple wants to get in on the lucrative mapping action. Their recent purchase of the mapping service company Placebase certainly suggests the possibility. Do you mind seeing ads intermingled with your map search re

Snow Leopard selling faster than LeopardFiled under: Retail, Software, Snow LeopardThey aren't flying off the shelves, but early signs are that Snow Leopard boxes are far exceeding sales of Leopard, and 4 times higher than sales of Tiger. That's the assessment of the NPD group, which tracks retail sales for many industries. The firm also notes that sales declined about 25% from week 1 to week 2, again, far better than both Leopard and Tiger. Tiger was released in April of 2005 and Leopard hit the streets in October of 2007. Of course, Snow Leopard sells for US$100.00 lower than the price of previous versions of Mac OS X, so that could be a large part of the success of the release. Stephen Baker of NPD noted, "As we head into the fall selling season, and the release of another

Survey: Average iPhone user has spent $80 on appsFiled under: Analysis / Opinion, Software, Freeware, Developer, iPhone, App Store$80 on apps? I didn't think it was that much, but after going over estimates in my head, that sounds about right, actually. A survey of 1200 App Store customers estimates that we've spent about $80 on applications so far, with an average of about 65 applications per customer. There's a little weirdness in those figures though: they also say that 65% of the apps downloaded were free, and that the average app price was $1.56. There's some extra information hidden in there: if 65% of the apps are $0, and the average price is still up above $1, that means people are spending way more than $1 on the apps that they do buy. More research seems needed there. There's a

ICOO E900P portable media playerAnother day, another portable media player to hit the market - this time round it would be the ICOO E900P which boasts support for 1280p videos - yup, you read that right. Forget about full HD as the E900P ushers in an even higher resolution, eh? Too bad the drawback would be less storage space due to the larger file size. Features include a 5" display at 800 × 480 resolution, USB on the go, support for popular audio and video codecs as well as a YPbPr port for video output. Funny how there is no HDMI port on this - what a shame! Permalink: ICOO E900P portable media player from Ubergizmo | RSS Sponsor: Win a Fellowes Microshred Paper Shredder!

Bing market share increasesInteresting - US search market figures for last month by Nielsen points towards the ascension of Microsoft's Bing with Google's market share figures dropping. With Bing being the default search engine for Internet Explorer and Motorola's range of Android-powered handsets, Microsoft must be doing something right to keep 'em coming back for more. Proportionately speaking, Bing experienced a 14.7% increase compared to Google - which is a totally different story from its traditional path which came at the expense of Yahoo instead. Where do you think will be Bing's saturation point? Permalink: Bing market share increases from Ubergizmo | RSS Sponsor: Win a Fellowes Microshred Paper Shredder!

Nokia CS-12 Internet Stick Headed For AT&TWhile there isn’t any official word from Nokia or AT&T just yet, a recent FCC filing seems to indicate that Nokia’s CS-12 Internet Stick might be headed for AT&T, as it features all the appropriate GSM and WCDMA bands needed for AT&T’s network. AT&T’s current network won’t be able to hit the CS-12’s 5.56Mbps speeds, as the network is still stuck on 3.6Mbps, but if the connection is stable, it shouldn’t be that bad. FCC Filing. iLuv ISP150 Bar SpeakeriLuv is ready to rock and roll with the ISP150 Bar Speaker, where it will turn the rather ordinary iPod into a portable disco - assuming you aren't rocking out in some huge hall, of course. Meant to work in tandem with the iPad, notebook and iPod, its integrated speakers can be powered via USB or a quartet of AAA batteries. Features include a 3.5mm audio jack, USB connectivity as well as a power switch and volume control. At $34.99 a pop, we wonder who would want to lug it around on their travels since it doesn't seem all that convenient.
