Mac Home Automation on your TV with Indigo and PlexPlex + Indigo + Harmony Remote = Home Automation Bliss Why do it? About a year ago, I decided to take the home automation plunge and sought out ways to automate my home's lighting, entertainment and HVAC systems. Stihl's autumn calendar automatically rips through to tomorrowUnless they're incredibly quiet or potentially explosive, you won't find us waxing poetic (or even prosaic) about leaf blowers. But if a company that produced leaf blowers made a motorized calendar that tore off its own pages? We'd tell you about that in a heartbeat -- even if the wonderfully wasteful contraption turned out to be a viral ad by agency Euro RSCG rather than an actual household organizer, and even if its pages aren't nearly as saucy as Stihl's usual NSFW fare. Believe it or not, there's no blade inside that brushed aluminum shell; the process works by ripping out the bookbinding thread along the calendar's spine using a motorized reel. Join us in celebrating the wonder of pressed dead wood floating to earth all by its lonesome

Nikon D90 torn down, rebuilt in pink (video)Words... what good are words when you're trying to describe the horrific visage of a growling, rugged, heavyweight camera coated in the frilly tutu of the color spectrum, magenta? We shan't try to describe the peculiar mix of revolt, disgust and subtle desire that this whole thing incites in us, and will just point you after the break for the video. There's plenty of good clean fun to be had while exploring the dismantled D90 (though there's one instance of foul language when the modder gets an electric shock, understandable) and if you're of a nervous disposition you can always skip the shockingly pink finale.Continue reading Nikon D90 torn down, rebuilt in pink (video)Nikon D90 torn down, rebuilt in pink (video) originally appeared on Eng

ASUS Cine5 is 'world's most compact' five-channel speaker, doesn't forget the blue LEDsSeriously, who told manufacturers that we're in love with garish LED status lights?ASUS has strapped a glowing orb of unnecessariness around the volume knob of the Cine5 -- an otherwise perfectly acceptable and appreciably diminutive PC soundbar. With an array of speaker drivers integrated into that curvy body, ASUS claims the Cine5 produces realistic multidirectional surround sound, but does admit it's mostly intended for smaller spaces such as study rooms. The announcement also includes a nod to FPS gamers, with claims that the improved positional audio on offer will benefit both gameplay immersion and accuracy when identifying a sound source, though we reckon the biggest boon will still be the elimination of the extra cables and speakers

HP ropes in Dr. Dre for 'Lets Do Amazing' personality makeoverWhen you think about HP, do you think about printers or maybe IT outsourcing? How about HP smartphones, ever think of them? Verizon promises first 4G handset for next summer, foretells end of unlimited data plansAlright, you ultrafast mobile broadband zealots, whip out your calendars and draw a big red tick around the middle of 2011. Verizon's CTO Anthony Melone has identified next summer as the carrier's release window for its first LTE handset, which should be preceded by the 4G service being rolled out by the end of this year. If you're wondering what you'll be using on that "faster than 3G" network while waiting for the vanguard handset, we saw plenty of LTE-equipped gear at CES and let's not forget about that 1080p-decodin' NVIDIA tablet that was teased during the show. The one bit of bogus news from Melone was the statement that contracts with "as much data as you can consume is the big issue that has to change." Verizon seems resolutely set

Verizon sees opportunity in iPadSection: Apple, Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers Although the iPad’s 3G version is targeted for AT&T users only, Verizon is seeing a golden opportunity in the device’s upcoming release. Sales documents leaked to Engadget show Verizon is prepping it’s staff to encourage customers to buy the WiFi only version instead and then pick up a MiFi and data plan It’s a savings of $130 for the customer and a sweet deal for Verizon. There’s one hitch though-Verizon’s data plan costs a hefty $60, $30 more than AT&T’s unlimited iPad only plan. Of course that $30 AT&T data plan may not do much good in areas such as New York and San Francisco where the company’s data network is already overwhelmed by

How to fix audio loss in Remote Desktop for Mac with 64-bit WindowsSo, after upgrading my PC from Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit version to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit edition, I quickly determined that using Remote Desktop Connection for Mac 2.0 to connect to the PC resulted in no sound coming through the audio redirection feature. What Kind Of Damage Would An Underwear Bomb Actually Do To A Flying 747 Jetliner?Remember the jackass that tried exploding his little terrorist genitals onboard Northwest Flight 253 over Christmas? Well the BBC set out to investigate exactly what kind of damage a crotchful of PETN could actually do to a flying jetliner. The BBC did a test on an old decomissioned 747, putting a dummy with the same type and amount of explosives found on the underwear bomber. As you can see in the above video, the flexibility of the outside of the frame allowed it to absorb the blast. If the bomb had gone off, the plane would have still been able to fly and land. Of course, the damage inside the plane still would have been horrific. But it's nice to know that the trusty 747 can stand up to such abuse. Oh man, had I been on that plan

Deep Water Bath Fills Your Tub to the Brim [Stuff We Like]A luxurious soak in the bathtub is that much better when you can sink all the way up to your chin. Use Deep Water Bath to override the overflow valve and get extra inches of water in the tub.Home decorating blog Apartment Therapy directed us to this cool gadget. It fits over your tub's drain overflow valve to let the water rise nearly to the rim. The semi-plug has a drain hole at the top, though, so your tub won't actually overflow. It's removable, too, and easy to stash when not in use. Pick it up at Amazon for around $7. For a self-made, and much more permanent, approach, Apartment Therapy has some other ideas for filling your tub nice and high. You can buy power strips that sense when the computer hooked up to them powers down and shut down the peripherals accordingly, but it didn't fit my need. Often times I would leave my computer on to do some task but I wanted to kill the power to the monitors easily and with a single motion. Top 10 Tips and Tools for Commuters [Lifehacker Top 10]U.S. commuters spend an average of 50 minutes in their car each day, and that leaves a lot of room for improvement. Make the most of your commute with these 10 tips.Photo by mattlemmon. 10. Adjust Your Mirrors for Better Vision Most people set up their car's mirrors in a way that keeps the edge of their own car in their vision, mostly to provide a sense of perspective. This limits the amount of "blind spot" coverage provided by your mirrors. Car and Driver suggests a new alignment technique supported by the Society of Automotive Engineers that covers more angles with your side and rear view mirrors. Use a Smartphone Car Mount as a Kitchen Helper [Clever Uses]Most smartphones have one or two great cooking apps, and while using your pocketable device to help out in the kitchen can be more convenient than finding a place for your laptop or wasting paper, smart-home blog Unplggd has a clever suggestion:Our new apartment has some pretty archaic kitchenware. So old, we can't quite figure out how to use the timer on the oven. While we could just look at the clock and determine how long something needs to be on the stovetop or in the cooker, we tend to get distracted easily and realize only too late that we've been cooking for too long. In order to keep from burning all our meals we now use an iPod Touch and a car mount. It's sort of like a tinkering third hand but for the kitchen. I particularly love

All Android Phones in the U.S. Will Receive an Upgrade to Android 2.1 [Updates]According to Android fan site Android and Me, every Android phone in the U.S. will eventually receive an update to Android 2.1. That's great news for Android users (like our own Kevin Purdy) who've been frustrated with how quickly Android devices are left in the upgrade dust. Not every device will be capable of supporting every feature of Android 2.1 (like live wallpapers or other hardware prohibitive stuff), but that's the sort of thing that's to be expected. The bad(ish) news: Select Android phones will require a wipe when they are upgraded to Android 2.1. I actually only know of phones that will require a wipe, so it could include all of them (minus the Droid which is already on Android 2.0.1). Select Android phones will also require a

The company also does customer satisfaction surveys in a number of other industries, and yesterday they released the 2009 Wireless Consumer Smartphone Satisfaction Survey and the 2009 Wireless Business Smartphone Satisfaction Survey. As you might not expect after all of the commenter griping we see about the iPhone, Apple nabbed the number one spot in customer satisfaction in both the consumer and business surveys. iPhone's Google Maps app now shows adsFiled under: Software, iPhone, iPod touchHave you noticed the new "Sponsored Link" search results showing up when you search in Google Maps on your iPhone? These new search results are ads. They're easy to pick out, because they use a customized icon instead of the typical push pin icon. While it's not surprising that Google is going to want to find every way possible to monetize its mapping service, it's still a little disconcerting to see these results popping up. Given this obvious new revenue stream, it makes us wonder whether Apple wants to get in on the lucrative mapping action. Their recent purchase of the mapping service company Placebase certainly suggests the possibility. Do you mind seeing ads intermingled with your map search re

Snow Leopard selling faster than LeopardFiled under: Retail, Software, Snow LeopardThey aren't flying off the shelves, but early signs are that Snow Leopard boxes are far exceeding sales of Leopard, and 4 times higher than sales of Tiger. That's the assessment of the NPD group, which tracks retail sales for many industries. The firm also notes that sales declined about 25% from week 1 to week 2, again, far better than both Leopard and Tiger. Tiger was released in April of 2005 and Leopard hit the streets in October of 2007. Of course, Snow Leopard sells for US$100.00 lower than the price of previous versions of Mac OS X, so that could be a large part of the success of the release. Stephen Baker of NPD noted, "As we head into the fall selling season, and the release of another

Survey: Average iPhone user has spent $80 on appsFiled under: Analysis / Opinion, Software, Freeware, Developer, iPhone, App Store$80 on apps? I didn't think it was that much, but after going over estimates in my head, that sounds about right, actually. A survey of 1200 App Store customers estimates that we've spent about $80 on applications so far, with an average of about 65 applications per customer. There's a little weirdness in those figures though: they also say that 65% of the apps downloaded were free, and that the average app price was $1.56. There's some extra information hidden in there: if 65% of the apps are $0, and the average price is still up above $1, that means people are spending way more than $1 on the apps that they do buy. More research seems needed there. There's a
