No relief for commuters(George Rizer/Globe Staff) Anyone who has rode the T for the past several months knows getting a seat is now almost as nonexistent as a cheap ticket to a Red Sox Game. But aside from all the Boston baseball fanatics that pile on the Green Line - who help the situation by delaying commutes 15 minutes, thank you - there's simply a bigger crowd these days. The MBTA just reported its fifth consecutive month of year-over-year increases in ridership, which for May was 5.3 percent higher. Try not to wrinkle your suit. Perhaps commuting on the Pike was a bit better last month, as there was 3.5 percent fewer drivers - about 600,000 cars - in May versus last year. Of course turnpike officials saw that coming, and increased tolls. So where's the r

The need for domestic ITWhen talking about the trend of outsourcing jobs in America to other countries (also known as offshoring), one of the first industries that usually seems to come up is IT (information technology, for those of you with an aversion to widely known acronyms). Because of this trend, it would seem logical then that domestic IT jobs would become more scarce as more companies send IT work overseas. But is that really the case? A few recent reports show that demand for IT positions in the near future will continue to grow at a fast rate, making domestic IT work an in-demand industry. In fact, there seems to actually be a shortage of qualified IT workers in the US right now. The AP reports: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 854,0

Texting on your work phoneDo you use your company cellphone to send out personal text messages? Are you worried that those communications can be easily accessed and used against by your employer? Well, thanks to a new ruling by a US federal appeals court, it is now harder for employers to legally gain access to text messages that are sent by employees on company phones, the Associated Press reports: Under Wednesday's ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, employers that contract an outside business to transmit text messages can't read them unless the worker agrees. Users of text-messaging services "have a reasonable expectation of privacy" regarding messages stored on the service provider's network, Judge Kim Wardlaw wrote in the three-judge panel's una

Basketball, late nights, and workOK, admit it, you missed the Celtics' Game 4 comeback last Thursday against the Lakers ... it was getting late, the Celtics looked like toast, and you needed to work the next day. It's understandable. But then you woke up the next morning, heard the news of the comeback, and wished you hadn't gone to bed so early. You don't plan to let it happen again ... in fact you're terrified you'll miss a chance to witness Boston sports history. So you stay up late. Really late. After Sunday night's Game 5 loss, your sleep schedule is in shambles and your work day is nonproductive. And now you have to get ready to do it all again. With the Celtics and Lakers tipping off Game 6 Tuesday night, and a potential Game 7 on Thursday night, the 9 p.m. star

Work, technology, and information overloadBetween emails, text message, IMs, phone calls, etc., our attention is always divided, and we are constantly jumping from one project to the next, with little time to sit and focus on a single task, says Maggie Jackson. The Balancing Acts columnist and author of the new book, 'Distracted: The Erosion of Attention and the Coming Dark Age,' chatted with Boston.com readers on Monday about dealing with the non-stop flow of information and myriad ways to communicate in the digital age. Here's an excerpt from the chat: Qudrcps: Recently, a person in our office was handed a Blackberry with eseentially no instructions, was told that she was to forward all her her mail to it, and, no surprise, has ended up with 90+ messages a day. I've talked to

Common job search mistakesThe Globe Magazine's Careers Issue came out this past Sunday, and included a bunch of useful stuff for the job seeker. One feature they had was titled "7 deadly sins of the job search." It contained a number of common pitfalls that job seekers fall into when looking for a job. Among them were: Discussing money too early in the interview process. When asked for your salary expectations, say, "Well, it really depends on the specific scope and responsibilities of the position, which I'm still getting my arms around. Perhaps we could discuss this later on in the process when I have more information." - Lauren Mackler, Lauren Mackler & Associates LLC, Newton Talking too much during an interview. Of sports coaches and CEOsWhat's the difference between a really good CEO and a top-notch professional coach? Well, aside the fact that one group shares locker rooms with sweaty athletes, not much. An article at HRWorld.com looks at the traits of successful CEOs and argues that many of the top pro coaches share those attributes, which generally involve getting a diverse group of people on the same page and making the whole greater than the sum of the parts. A list is presented of the top 10 coaches who would make "exceptional CEOs." One prominent local coach made the list: 2. The career paths of bloggersThere are many blogs out there on the Internet. Even on Boston.com, there are a whole slew of blogs and bloggers (present company included.) But for those most successful bloggers out there, the ones who are known around the country and who make their living off of their little slice of the Web, how did they start out? What jobs preceded their blogging days? Well, mainstreet.com asked a few well-known bloggers what they did for a paycheck before they got the blogging bug. Here is a sampling: Blog: Celebrity Babies Blogger: Danielle Freidland First Job: Freidland was a floater at an executive search firm. Bay State loses 2,400 jobs in AprilMassachusetts employers cut about 2,400 jobs in April, according to the state Department of Workforce Development. The drop ended a streak of six months of consecutive gains in payroll employment. However, a separate survey showed the state unemployment rate dropped to 4.1 percent in April, down from 4.4 percent in March, making it the lowest rate since September 2001 and almost a point lower than the national rate of 5 percent. The Globe's Robert Gavin reports: The state economy in recent months has performed better than the nation's because of the strength of its healthcare and technology sectors. Education and healthcare added 3,200 jobs in April, and 14,500 over the past year. Information employment, which includes software publishers

And how important is that for top jobs - or indeed, THE (debatable) top job? Picked this up from one of the people I’m following on Twitter (am I becoming a twitter fan? Read at your leisure, but its all about the future trend towards easily searchable content created by people you trust, which has certain ramifications for the future digital recruitment advertising industry. http://www.micropersuasion.com/2008/06/friendfeed-can.html

CIPD award twittering – it’s a goerSo despite the underwhelming response to my question about if there was any interest in twittering an awards event – we’re gonna give it a shot anyway. Perhaps Twitts need to be engaged in the twitter space rather than through the blogosphere (or, and probably more likely I concede, perhaps no-one’s really that interested in being a part of the evening if they can’t get horribly drunk at someone else’s expense – sorry – I mean partake first hand in the ambience of the night celebrating the great and the good of our industries creative output), so we’ll see how many followers we get. But, if you are a Twitt then you’ll need to know that I’ll be covering it under the @digitalrecing profile (I’ve also created a personal o

Onrec tomorrow - Any Questions? In keeping with Digital Recruiting's move towards Social Media (see Alex's CIPD post below). I thought I'd give people the opportunity to send me any questions they wanted to ask the panel during the discussion at the Onrec conference tomorrow. I'm chairing an illustrious panel featuring John Salt of Totaljobs, Adele Poole of HotLizard, Laura Stoker of Airs, Emma Mirrington of BskyB and Tony Roy of Careerbuilder. The topic is "How to minimise costs in recruitment during a downturn". If anyone who can't make it (or even those who can) want to suggest a question then either leave a comment or email me directly on matt.alder@barkers.co.uk. I'll blog the responses from the panel later in the week Matt

Supreme Court Limits Public Employee Equal Protection ClaimsThe Supreme Court has ruled that government employees who complain of unfair or arbitrary workplace treatment that is inconsistent with treatment of other employees in similar circumstances may not maintain a claim under the Constitution’s equal protection clause, -- unless the mistreatment is due to discrimination on the basis of race, sex or another protected category.

Illegal to Bar Employee Discussion of Compensation, NLRB ReiteratesIn recently discussing the Ledbetter Supreme Court case on the time limits for filing compensation discrimination charges, and Congressional efforts to alter its result, I mentioned, in passing, the NLRB (National Labor Relations Board) position on rules against discussing compensation. Many people are opposed to pay discrimination and may be motivated to share such information in order to ferret out and remedy possible discrimination. They may, however, be concerned that doing so would violate the employer's confidentiality rules. It is thus significant that the NLRB recently issued a decision reaffirming its position on rules prohibiting or chilling employee discussion of compensation and benefits.

Good Recruits Good Recruits

Sales = Recruitment: Part 2 of 5Aside from shared philosophies, sales and recruitment do have a lot of things in common and this includes the deliverables which could be found in the two process. These deliverables could be considered as common but if you look at it, you would know that the process of delivering such results is based on the effort done by the people who are tasked to do such responsibility. What are these common goals? Here are some examples:    * Monthly/weekly/daily meetings about pipelines, activity, etc.    * Incentive-based compensation models.    * Ongoing motivational contests to reward top performers.    * Emphasis on ongoing learning, execution, and time management.    * Aggressive attitude about achieving goals and performance mana

Sales=Recruitment? Part 1 of 5There is a big similarity if you compare sales and recruitment. Though that is the case, does that mean we have to adapt certain rules and policies that are applicable to sales? That is something that is really worth debating for and believe me, this is a very good reason to point at.If you are not convinced, here are some shared philosophies that both recruitment and sales have when it is being practiced:-Recruiters prospect/source for candidates, while sales people prospect/source for new business opportunities/contacts.-Recruiters develop relationships with prospects to turn them into candidates, while sales people develop relationships to turn prospects into viable business opportunities.-Recruiters assess the candidate’s skills to de

Things to Remember When InterviewingOf course, as a recruiter, interviewing is something that is just normal to us and there is a tendency to forget the basic things which we have to remember when interviewing. Here is a quick guide which could help us in making sure that we do a "good interview".-The majority of applicants "exaggerate" to get a job-Most hiring decisions are made by intuition during the first few minutes of the interview-Two out of three hires prove to be a bad fit within the first year on the job-Most interviewers are not properly trained nor do they like to interview applicants-Excellent employees are misplaced and grow frustrated in jobs where they are unable to utilize their strengthsI believe that keeping these things in mind would actually help recruite

Recruitment: Crucial to CompaniesSome people most especially executives underestimate the HR Department especially Recruitment as an important part of a company's structure. The flow of new hires in an organization helps in maintaining the stability of the company as well as in ensuring that the strategy that is going to be implemented would push through. Here is an excerpt on why recruitment should be considered important in an organization:The HRM Function needs to be adaptive enough to react quickly to the changes in the business strategy. When the strategic initiative is started, the recruitment and selection process can become very critical quickly and the HRM Function has to be able to change the mindset of the recruitment specialists. This just means that companies

Mistake 9: A Good Background CheckUpon hiring people, there should always be an SOP where it comes to checking up the true background and whereabouts of the people that were hired. Here is an interesting report which talks about this topic:there is a fairly high percentage of false information presented in resumes and job applications ... i.e., 15% to 20% of job applicants try to hide some dark chapter of their lives.2 For some positions it can be as high as one out of every three resumes. It does not mean that these applicants should not be considered for the job. It just means that there should be a thorough recruitment process for these candidates because the "dark history" could be a decisive point on whether or not that person should be fit in the position that they are
» 22 Jun 2008, 8:03 am

Mistake 8: The "Good Guy" TheoryEvery company wants to hire the "good guy" as opposed to other applicants simply because these candidates would be more or less effective in the position that these people are applying for. Though this could be considered as effective to companies, there are times where this kind of strategy would not work. Here is a good example:Selecting athletes can offer a clear example. At the lowest level jobs, maybe "T-ball", or little league, the selection criteria for a baseball player are very broad: dexterity, lack of fear of the ball, and a desire to play. As we move up to the high school or college level, the baseball selection criteria get more focused on the four general skills required for the game: running, hitting, throwing and fielding. Al

Mistake 7: Non-ResearchAs I mentioned before, research should be an integral part of your life as a recruiter. Although this may sound a little nerd-ish, there is much to gain when you do research in your job. This is considered as the seventh common mistake that recruiters do because most recruiters do not know the reason why most people resign from that job because they feel that there job would stop once they hire the people for these posts and they do not care if these people stayed in the position that they are applying for.Research consistently shows that people fail in a job due to factors different from the criteria used to select them. Most managers can list the two, three or four most common reasons people have failed. Surprisingly, however, this exerci

Mistake 6: Statistically-Based Reasoning when RecruitingEvery position differs and using a statistically-validated test for ALL of these positions would only lead you to be inaccurate about choosing the best candidate that would be selected for the position. The reason behind it is because of the different skills which you have to measure through tests and some standardized ones does not even have a grasp of yet. This is a great reason why this is included as the 6th common hiring mistakes:First, they tend to focus on theories instead of facts, e.g., what facts or data prove that a high level of "self-confidence" guarantees a better employee. Second, they focus on attitudes, experience and abilities, not on skills. Skills are the critical elements that consistently predict job success.
» 14 Jun 2008, 11:02 am

Mistake 5: The "You" IdolatryHaving yourself as a measure of standardization to other applicants or candidates would not work especially if you are hiring for various positions that would require different kind of skills. This kind of perspective would only lead you to an endless search of candidates because not everyone could actually be a copy of you. This is an interesting quote from the source article:Most importantly, when you use yourself as a model your own ego has to get in the way. It does for everybody, and that "bias" can interfere with your objectivity in judging others...a fatal flaw when hiring. Are your guilty of this sin? Image source: Stockxpert

Taleo acquires VurvSince getting started in this industry over 10 years ago, I've been amazed by the never-ending stream of companies trying to build better mousetraps in the Talent Management (aka Applicant Tracking) space.I understand why it's a tempting niche - customers routinely report that they are unhappy with their existing software and want better alternatives, but somehow the profits never seem to arrive for most.  Industry watchers have been predicting consolidation for years.Today, Taleo (profile; site) announced that they acquired Vurv Technology(profile; site) for $128.8 million in cash & stock.  The deal combines two of the strongest players in the space, so the consolidation is finally underway - at least among the major players. For the rec

Amybeth's going to Web 2.0!O'Reilly's Web 2.0 conference is in San Francisco this week.  For those living in a cave for the last couple of years, there is a huge amount of excitement, confusion, and sometimes hostility over the new tools and possibilities that have arrived with these new technologies.  How useful are they today?  How useful will they be?  Which ones are the "good" ones?  Inquiring recruiters want to know.To me, it's beyond debate that we are experiencing the biggest burst of creativity on the Internet since the bubble burst in 2000 (arguably before). Post-expo thoughtsThe latest ERE Expo is over, and the reviews are starting to come in. Here are a few of my thoughts from the show: It's been said before, but can never reall be said too many times.  Networking, networking, networking is where some of the most valuable and unvarnished information gets passed along at these conferences, and it's why the ERE Expo gets more valuable as it gets bigger.  As a company, it is our challenge to make sure that the events don't lose their intimate feel as they get larger. Selective Outsourcing Initiatives and Talent Management Software-as-a-Service Dominate at the Mid-year MarkAt mid-year, employers are choosing to dip their toes in the outsourcing pool, rather than jump in feet first. Attempts at wide-scale HR outsourcing haven’t been successful, mainly because vendors are underestimating the costs and companies won’t settle for cookie-cutter solutions. A more selective outsourcing approach allows vendors and employers to tackle each function independently, understand [...]

Dear Coworkers: Step Away From My CubeIs it just me, or do offices never seem to have an adequate amount of space for all workers?I'm not even talking about comfort. I mean literally having enough desks and chairs to go around. People always seem to be shoehorned into a corner near a fridge, or offices are shared when they should be solo. And let's not forget about the shrinking distance between cubicles. At $100 a square foot in major metropolitan areas, I can almost forgive companies for dehumanizing us into sardines. However, what excuses do their suburban counterparts have? From urban centers to quiet suburbs, I've repeatedly seen this phenomenon, regardless of ZIP code.If that weren't bad enough, it appears many people never learned the limits of personal space. Have you ever felt so nervous that you were oozing buckets of sweat even before your interviewer asked you those tricky intricate questions? Well, it may not be your fault for feeling like this. It may have something to do with the cunningness of your interviewer. It is likely that your interviewer may have arranged his office furnishings to raise his own status and power, and, in doing so, lowered yours. Just look at the chairs around your office and then look at the executive ones and you’ll see the difference. Here’s how it works...

The Work Hazard Known As FoodFood days, potlucks, international feasts, share days…no matter what you call it, these gluttonous events remain a serious work hazard.  OSHA should have a workplace regulation that bans these (and vending machines while they’re at it).  As we spend more time sitting in our cubicles, our natural tendency is to find a way to relieve the boredom.  Why else would we look forward to the monthly food day with as much anticipation as a long weekend?  Ok maybe not quite that much enthusiasm. As summer rolls in with full force, many of us find ourselves scurrying around trying to start that 10-day diet or at best, a half-hearted attempt to stick to the one you were already on.  Then enter the food day at work, complete with macaroni and

You or Boss: Who's at Fault? Here's how the story usually goes: "I HAD to leave.  My boss was determined to make my life miserable." In my experience, both personal and secondary, I have discovered that in the majority of cases, the failure of the relationship lies on the employee, not the boss or the organization. People who tend to get 'unlucky' and experience this misfortune over and over again, usually can use a little self-reflection.  Start with these questions...

You Are NOT Married to Your Job (you are only dating)You always hear about how over 50% of marriages are doomed to fail from the start. To anyone who is happily married, the statistic sounds grossly exaggerated.  With several friends and acquaintances on the brink of the big 'D-word,' I've been thinking about the parallels and differences between the relationship we have with our significant other and the relationship we have with our jobs.  Each couple seems to head for Splitsville for different reasons, yet there is a consistent theme: they all try to force it to work for too long. We human beings seem to have a very difficult time 'quitting while we're ahead.'   Win $200 at the roulette table?  Give it all back. Talk about selling your home? While you were talking, prices have

Three Ways to Kill Your Boss (Editor's Note: While we strike to help you make work better, sometimes a good ol' fashioned rant is in order.  Please excuse us.  Chris hasn't had the best day at work.) If Hitler was the as*hole of the 20th Century, then my boss is the rusty bullet hole of the 21st. It is beyond me why my company would hire such an inconceivable, gigantic, heap of steaming horse sh*t, to do the job that he apparently does. If you, like me, are fed up with your boss’s shenanigans, then you should use this article as a way to unleash your distain, anguish, and unventilated-raw-old-fashioned-anger. So, without further adieu, here are 3 ways to kill your boss.     Death by Dildo Invite your boss down into the basement of your office building

What Makes a City Telecommute Friendly? This article proclaims to describe "20 of the Best Cities in the World for Telecommuting". Not only does the article suffer from a seriously awkward title (how about "The 20 best cities for telecommuting"? See, that wasn't so hard.) it also has some serious flaws in its choices. I mean, Mexico City? Really? I'll live in Mexico City if I want to die from an upper respiratory disease or lose my sense of smell, but not if I want to telecommute. Also, when talking about Canada, the author espouses that Vancouver BC is "one of the largest cities in the state." Yes, in the state. Edit much?

Happy New (Fiscal) Year!I realize it’s only June, but it's the end of the fiscal year for Microsoft. This is one of my favorite times of the year (calendar, that is). Summer is starting to really begin, the deer and bunnies reappear in my backyard and Rainier cherries are finally in season! It’s a time to look back at our last fiscal year (July through June) and see how much success we had in bringing the top talented individuals into Microsoft. It’s astounding to me to see the growth in this company and know that the innovation and future success is due in part to our hard work and recruiting efforts. Now is also the time that we start planning for the next fiscal year: determining the budget, looking at headcount, figuring out recruiting strategies, etc.

Questions? Ask your Microsoft Recruiter!Hello Everyone! This is something I hear about occasionally that came up again just last week. It appears as though some of our Microsoft candidates are relying on outside sources, even recruiters from other companies, for Microsoft related information because they're worried about asking their Microsoft recruiter too many questions. So, it seems like a good time to encourage everyone to ASK YOUR MICROSOFT RECRUITER if you have questions about process, policy or whatever else is on your mind. We are here to help and have a direct focus on your experience as a candidate. It is our job to make sure you have as many of your questions answered as we possibly can! As a recent example, one of my teammates was working with a candidate that was

Why do I need a Live ID to apply online? Here's the final post in Kenji's series about the Microsoft recruiting process! As promised in my last post, I wanted to shed a little light on our use of Live ID in the application process, and list some of the benefits that both recruiters and candidates can get from this step in the process. Differentiation: Multiple candidates with the same name? No problem. Tracking by Live ID allows your recruiter an easy method for knowing one from the other. Speaking from personal experience, I’ve actually had several occasions where I’ve been talking to two candidates with the exact same name, from the exact same city, in the same day. I’m sure you can imagine the hijinks that might otherwise ensue! Tracking & Communication: This is kind o

Inside the Applicant Tracking SystemGuest blogger Kenji has more information on the Microsoft Interview Process. I’ve been getting a question a lot from candidates recently: “Why are you asking me to apply online?” There are a variety of ways I might reach out to a potential candidate and regardless of the method, I’ll *always* ask a candidate to apply online for my position through our careers site. So why is this? Well, there are a variety of reasons – though at the most basic of levels, it's simply, because. :-) Your online application itself is an intrinsic part of the Microsoft recruiting process. It’s a way for me to verify that you’re really interested in my position, and it is the first step in making your interest “official.” Microsoft is not al

What happens when you go away on vacation for a month?Lisa has a great story about officemates at Microsoft! What happens when you go away on vacation for a month? Well if you’re Neil, the Staffing Director of the Platform and Services Division, you’ll be surprised to return and find that your side of the office has been redecorated entirely in pink. His officemate, Jen, cooked up the idea to decorate his office with a “Princess Barbie” theme when her boss was away on vacation in the UK. She recruited several fellow employees and they decided to go all out on only Neil’s half of the room. Let’s be clear, Jen’s half was not touched! Neil was greeted by the instigators with “I’m a Barbie Girl” playing in the background. Needless to say, his face turned as pink as the room!
