A few local CFO's may be hiringBy Chris Reidy, Globe staff Be nice to chief financial officers - at a time when every day seems to bring news of more layoffs, some local CFOs are hiring. That's one headline from a financial hiring index compiled by Robert Half International Inc., a California firm that provides staffing and risk consulting services and that has a presence in Boston. According to the local component of the Robert Half survey, which was based on interviews with 200 chief financial officers from a sample of companies with 20 or more employees, the hiring of full-time accounting and finance professionals in the Boston area is expected to increase in the second quarter, with 9 percent of chief financial officers surveyed planning to add s

Rise in Greater Boston's college employmentThis article originally appeared in the Business News Updates blog on Boston.com. By Chris Reidy, Globe staff Employment in colleges and universities increased 18.4 percent in the Boston area between 1990 and 2006, a steeper increase than the 11.1 percent gain across all industries, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics said. In a report titled “The Prominence of Colleges and Universities in the Boston Metropolitan Area," the bureau looked at employment and wage data to analyze the labor market impact and contributions of colleges and universities on the local economy. One report finding is hardly a surprise: No other metropolitan area in the United States came close to matching Boston’s concentration of employment in higher education.

Cheezhead Cheezhead

jobing acquires cheezheadBy Joel Cheesman - Before Twitter and Facebook, blogging was the quickest and cheapest way to create Brand You. So, when launching HRSEO in 2005, it was a no-brainer to blog in order to do those things, as well as create a positive image and maybe drive a sale or two. Any readers would have been a pleasant surprise, as I was focused on building a business and keeping a roof over my head. But readers came. And as they came, sales followed. And thus began how much of the next 4 years would play-out. What started as a simple subdomain on Typepad quickly became the stand-alone site you see here today. In 2008, I made the decision to hire employees and open an office, dedicating more time and energy around existing and new businesses. The plan

Are Job Boards ruining what could have been a beatiful thing?Jamie Leonard recently wrote a great post on "Recruitment Relationships: It's not me, it's you" where he took a tongue in cheek look at the various advertising / engagement channels open to recruiters. The bit that really jumped out at me was the piece on Job Boards: "Job Boards Now 5 or so years into their married , the job board and recruiters are still very much going strong. Their relationship is one based on trust, equality and understanding, but how long will this marriage last? Well that really depends on both parties. Relationships relying on honesty and with the market now picking up, the job board market are certainly the one “trying to make it work”. The market is over crowded, to say the least, and recruiters have a lot of o

As it is also a year since I last reposted it, I thought it was high time we all took another look. Now interestingly as I re-watched this, it didn't seem quite as bad as I remembered! With sites like Animoto offering easy to use software which anyone can use to replicate the photo montage style, this kind of rough and ready promo has actually become quite common. It wasn't long though before I realised that I was viewing it with the sound turned off......it only took a few seconds of reacquainting myself with the song to be sure that it is still the worst recruitment video ever! The truth is, nobody knows anything.By Chris Muktar (Founder - Wikijob.co.uk) Let me start by saying I'm a guest writer, so please be nice! One of the things I have noticed lately is how the recruitment industry has changed not recently but over centuries. In biblical times, I imagine jobs were advertised by word of mouth, then signs for the literate, likely followed by job noticeboards and then local press, finally culminating with the internet in the last decade and a half, and moving towards social media in the next. One of the most interesting problems we face when trying to sell social media is selling the concept. It's rare that a client actually expects that their social media campaign will generate any applications. Many are just sticking their toes in the water and s

Crowdsourcing ApathyAh, election year....the prospect of shiny new change or focusing your current leaders to deliver on past promises they have made...how exciting! or really....it used to be, but not so much this year. I don't think I can ever recall being this apathethic about a general election. It's a sad state of affairs to be in, feeling that neither party offers any particular hope. Just as well then, we have something of interest we can watch from our seats of indifference - how each party fayres in their use of social media in helping to get elected. After Obama came to power on the wave of hope and an amazing social media campaign, the bar has been set very high. So, first to have piqued my interest and get off the starting blocks is Labour. Personal Assistants Worth Their Weight In GoldThe daily life of anyone who has managed to secure themselves a PA job is certainly never dull!  The main role of a PA has certainly changed over the last few years and PAs are now regarded as being practically the lynchpin of the management suite.   A good PA will not just organise their manager’s diary, but also ensure that calls are screened and that time is set aside not just for meetings, but to carry out essential duties.  PAs also act as a buffer zone between all those people who want to meet the boss or take up his/her time and it is often said that a good PA is practically worth their weight in gold.   Highs include successfully ensuring that difficult situations are dealt with appropriately, which often requires really q

Managing Your Talent PoolHaving a productive talent pool is now considered as the best approach in terms of recruitment. This productive talent pool should always be cultivated and also be developed in order to maximize the benefits from it. How do you ensure a "productive talent pool"? Well, you could consider these clever sourcing strategies:-referral networks-tapping into Alumni communities-revisiting stored CVs/ResumeThe candidates gathered through these activities should be processed in one way or another in order to ensure that you maximize these people. Of course, you have to give back if you are going to consider these applicants. Here is an excellent suggestion on how companies could give back:"If you are being clever about attracting candidates to your ca

Focusing on Fresh GraduatesIf your company is more into the "massive hiring" type then attracting fresh graduates is definitely the best strategy that you could implement in the company. One thing that you could do as recruiters is to have an "online" connection with fresh graduates since they are the ones who spend a lot of time online. Through establishing an online connection, you would be able to connect and communicate with them thus enticing them to apply to your company. Here are some tips from Recruitment 2.0:-Create a top-notch interactive graduate site that will get graduates’ attention and keep them coming back to your site. -Get graduates to your web site and then have them opt in so you can communicate with them.-Use professors, lecturers and assistants

Funny Job AdsWhenever I use vending machines or ATMs, I usually ponder on a silly thought: What if someone was actually inside doing the transaction for me? As I mentioned, this was just one of the silly thoughts that popped into my head whenever I get tired of interviews. Imagine my surprise and glee when I spotted this picture: Someone actually had the same thought as I am and translated it into a job ad! Clever, eh? This is just one avenue that job advertising could consider when they are actually thinking of having a different viewpoint when attracting applicants. Personally, I consider "unique" job ads is a great way to actually attract applicants because it would certainly caught their eye and would make them interested in applying. To see more si

Company Culture in RecruitmentAs a recruiter, we should look more than just what the applicants have but also dwell more on what we reprsent as a recruiter in the company or recruitment firm.Usually when we interview, we often look at the behavior of that person and we compare it to the position that they are actually looking for. The second thing is the "culture fit" wherein we are able to more or less predict that the person would actually fit in with the culture which the company and its people exhibit.

In the case that your relationship with this recruitment agency goes bad then prepare yourself for a very bad ride.I would like to share with you this particular write up which really talks negatively about recruitment agencies. Small Companies, Big StrategiesSmall companies when faced when big recruiting requirements should always have a solid plan or strategy in terms of fulfilling the requirements. One reason is because of the "small company" tag hence it could be viewed as an advantage or disadvantage for applicants. Here is a good recruitment strategy for small companies as indicated in this article:The best recruitment strategy for small company is to offer some kind of the benefit for its employees and business partners when they recommend a successful new hire. Wanted: Internal VacancyFilling up vacant positions through internal job posting could actually help a lot as opposed to hiring external candidates.Opportunities within the company should always be promoted and posting an internal job ad would certainly make your message get through the company employees. Personally. I always like to prioritize internal applicants especially for the positions that requires leadership and also knowledge in terms of the company. This is because more people that are hired externally has a better chance in terms of being productive with that kind of position. One thing that recruiters could actually see as an advantage includes the following:a. cost (it's much cheaper)b. already a "tenured" employeec. offers career path to employeesTh

Sales = Recruitment: Part 5 of 5If sales strategies were implemented with recruitment then the recruitment phase would be a breeze. Eventhough that is the case, not every company could be compatible with this kind of strategy in their recruitment because of their main focus in recruitment. There are some companies where they implement a "mass hiring" strategy thus focusing on the quantity of applicants that they hire. This means that this recruiment strategy is more on numbers. On the other hand, there is also a recruiment strategy which focuses on "quality" thus mainly choosing candidates if they have passed the specific and very rigorous requirement which companies have for their vacant positions.

A couple of chartsI'm a visual learner, and I get excited by good charts that communicate a lot of data in a simple way. In fact, every month I look forward to the last page of the Journal of Corporate Recruiting Leadership's last page of data. I just got a preview of next month's issue, and here's  are a couple that I found interesting: The first is from the Employer Brand Institute’s Employer Branding Global Research Study of 2,025 employers around the world.  I find it interesting that only 16% of them feel that they have a clear strategy around employer branding. The second is from a great story that our own John Zappe wrote tracking the progress of the .Jobs domain to date.  Growth has clearly been slowing after the initial SHRM push in 2006.

Where is social media going? In a comment on RecruitingBlogs.com, Josh pointed out that I have not posted there much, if at all.  His comment was an eye-opener for me. I have always been a supporter of RecruitingBlogs.com, and given the connection that I feel to the community on that site, it was a pretty big shock to see him point out that I had not posted there in over a year.  It made me think. And the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.  My professional social network is not about ERE.net, RecruitingBlogs.com or any other single site.  I feel a strong connection not to the domain name or the social media platform, but to the people on the other end of the conversations that I have, wherever they are. Taleo acquires VurvSince getting started in this industry over 10 years ago, I've been amazed by the never-ending stream of companies trying to build better mousetraps in the Talent Management (aka Applicant Tracking) space. I understand why it's a tempting niche - customers routinely report that they are unhappy with their existing software and want better alternatives, but somehow the profits never seem to arrive for most.  Industry watchers have been predicting consolidation for years. Today, Taleo (profile; site) announced that they acquired Vurv Technology(profile; site) for $128.8 million in cash & stock.  The deal combines two of the strongest players in the space, so the consolidation is finally underway - at least among the major players. We've seen some amazing things happening on FordyceLetter.com in the last few weeks - in particular blog posts and videos by people like Jeff Skrentny, Dave Staats, Bill Vick, and Dennis Smith.  Every one of these people has years in the recruiting trenches, is passionate about the profession, and knows recruiting ins

Amybeth's going to Web 2.0!O'Reilly's Web 2.0 conference is in San Francisco this week.  For those living in a cave for the last couple of years, there is a huge amount of excitement, confusion, and sometimes hostility over the new tools and possibilities that have arrived with these new technologies.  How useful are they today?  How useful will they be?  Which ones are the "good" ones?  Inquiring recruiters want to know. To me, it's beyond debate that we are experiencing the biggest burst of creativity on the Internet since the bubble burst in 2000 (arguably before). ERE is sending one of our favorite researchers, Amybeth Hale, to the conference to see what she can see and report back on the implications of Web 2.0 tools for recruiters. How Amybeth and I connec

Neal BruceI got an email from Neal Bruce yesterday saying that he would be leaving Monster and moving on to bigger and better things. For those of you who have not met Neal, he has been Monster's public face to the industry. I'm not sure how much - or even if - Neal's departure will affect Monster's bottom line, but it's a big loss for the company nevertheless.  He did a great job of humanizing what had become a huge faceless organization.  Before Neal, Monster was effectively estranged from it's customer base, who only heard from the company's reps when it was time to renew their packages at ever-increasing prices.  Neal provided an outlet - someone in management who had actually done recruiting himself, went to industry events and had a personal

Post-expo thoughtsThe latest ERE Expo is over, and the reviews are starting to come in. Here are a few of my thoughts from the show: It's been said before, but can never reall be said too many times.  Networking, networking, networking is where some of the most valuable and unvarnished information gets passed along at these conferences, and it's why the ERE Expo gets more valuable as it gets bigger.  As a company, it is our challenge to make sure that the events don't lose their intimate feel as they get larger. Twitter was one of the experiments that we tried this time around as a tool to make the show more personal, the feedback more immediate, and to foster more personal connections.  I was pleasantly surprised.  We created the ereexpo Twitter acco

Hey Boss, We're Not Illiterate! There's something I've hated since the third grade, yet I've found it trailing me like a bloodhound over the past two decades.  It's when a teacher hands out a syllabus or assignment and then preceeds to read the entire thing around.  This is not teaching.  This is not lecturing.  It is laziness. This problem has seeped into many of the meetings I attend.  Workers prepare reports and then read them alond - word for word.  If we are having a meeting, isn't it fair to expect that we will verbally discuss and expand upon the information contained on the paper?  These verbatim readers never see the attendees' eyes glazing over because they are too busy reading!Reading aloud might be effective for my wife's second grade class, but in the b

Forced to Come to the Office in a Snowstorm?Unless you earn a living as an emergency responder or snow-plow operator, there's no reason to report to work amidst a winter storm. Or, at least that's what logic and humanity seem to dictate. But who said cooler heads prevail at work?! Unfortunately for middle-of-the-ladder employees, we rarely get to see our bosses' "softer side." In the northeast, we have experienced some the worst snow conditions in 114 years--and even that didn't make employers change their rigid tune.Missing work when it snows is serious business. How to Choose an “Emotional” Pitstop - Part IIFinding Help for Major Career IssuesThere are so many job issues facing us these days - threats of layoffs, no merit increases, toxic work environments or a bad job fit. But who is the best resource to consult for help when it’s more than you can handle? In Part I, I discussed using your personal support system (friends, family, parents and co-worker/friends). Today, I’m looking at the pros and cons of using a professional network, including your boss.

How to Choose an “Emotional” Pitstop - Part 1Finding Help for Major Career IssuesI can only recall one job that had no inherent stress: I worked in a small card shop while in grad school. I read funny cards, rang up a few sales and had plenty of time to study. The majority of people experience some level of stress or difficult issue at work and it helps to have a supportive, sympathetic ear when you need to talk it through. But sometimes it’s hard to know who would be the best fit when discussing major career issues. Do you talk to your co-workers, boss, a psychotherapist, friends, family or parents, etc.? When does it make more sense to consult a career coach?First, let’s look at the pros and cons of getting emotional support from the people in your personal life. (Co-workers fal

On Sunday, March 14 at 2 a.m., we’ll be wishing we looked that dapper. Daylight Saving Time has more of a bewildering effect on our organism than anything else. It is mini jet-lag at its best. Every year it’s the same old story. We switch the clocks, blink bleary-eyed out the window, and wonder why it’s still dark outside. Three Good Novels About WorkYou’d think the last thing that you’d want to do, after spending eight or more hours at the office, is read about working at an office. But, much like that TV show everyone loves, representations of lives similar to ours--even if they’re satirized or dramatized--give us comfort. Empathy is a powerful emotion. And it’s a coping mechanism. The following are a short list of good books--by turns dark, funny, and evocative--that share with us in the joys and agonies of the workplace.  1. Networking Pays OffSometimes it IS Who you KnowI stopped in a local art gallery (Hayley Gallery) yesterday to see the owner. I interviewed her for a magazine article last year and we hit it off. I hadn’t seen her or been in the gallery for quite awhile, but I had an ulterior motive - I wanted to tell her I was looking for a job. Prior to opening her gallery, Hayley worked in marketing and advertising and she knows people. And it’s not just because she is so personable, she’s amazing at networking. You always hear the majority of people get their jobs through a network of who they know. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal, “Internal Hires, Referrals Were Most Hired in 2009,” by Sara Needleman cites some stats to back that up. She reports that,

Modifying your resume isn't always the answerDear JobsBlog: Would you recommend I tailor my resume when applying for a job? Does this help or hinder my chances of getting the position?-Resume Riled   Dear "Resume Riled": As with many areas of recruiting, it depends. It can definitely be valuable to tailor your resume for a specific position and, generally, I would tell my friends to do so. For example, if you are applying for a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) position, you may want to highlight or emphasize your QA/testing experience. While you don’t have to have hardcore testing experience to be a successful SDET, it definitely helps if you have prior experience in that area. That being said, when you apply via the Microsoft career site, you can only have one resume

Going out for a stretch... assignment, that is!Microsoft has done it again. They have amazed me in the way they accommodate and treat their employees. As you read from my previous post, I was job sharing in a Staffing Consultant role working 24-hour weeks. In October, I decided to switch back to working full-time. Well one of the career paths I have always wanted to explore is in program management working with our staffing systems. Guess what? It just so happened that the team needed some extra help, so now I am doing a stretch assignment for them for the next 8 months! A stretch assignment is a temporary role where you work full time in that new role and have a new manager/team. At the end of your assignment, you’ll return to your previous role, unless of course you decide your str

Softwear: The ideal interview attireIt’s the night before your interview and being the conscientious candidate that you are, you’re reviewing your check list to be sure you’re prepared for the big day: • Interview day schedule – check!• Confidence – check!• Classy yet casual outfit – question mark? When you pair a laid-back dress code with the high expectations of a competitive tech company, knowing how to dress to impress can be tough. But now, Softwear might just be your ticket. And, no, I didn’t forget to use spell check. Softwear is a new clothing line created by Microsoft and Chicago Hop-Hop artist Common to tell the world: “I’M A PC!” The designs sample retro bytes and bits from the 80s – when Microsoft and Common were both really coming

The JobsBlog team is packing our bagsHere at JobsBlog, we're packing our bags, but don't worry ... we're not going anywhere. Based on reader feedback, we're moving JobsBlog to our own website (yay!) where we can provide richer and deeper information on job searching, resume writing, interviewing, and working at Microsoft. Nothing about our blog will change, and everything should redirect seamlessly. But for those of you who just like to check in from time to time to get specific information, this new site should help tons. In preparation for our migration, we're turning off comments for about a week. But in the meantime, if you have anything burning to discuss, please be sure to join the conversation over on the Workin it at MSFT page on Facebook. We'll be back in full force

Interview advice from someone who's been therePreparing for an interview can be daunting -- and James McNaul would know. The University of Miami senior came all the way from Florida to Washington for an internship interview at the Microsoft HQ last spring. He wrote a blog detailing his interview experience and gave JobsBlog the go-ahead to share it with our readers. James said checking out blogs like this one really helped him get ready for his interview (which led to a successful summer internship and, later, a job offer -- way to go, James!).  Hope you find this helpful while preparing for your interview. Good luck! Thanks again, James! -Janelle

Intern roundtableHere on JobsBlog we talk a lot about getting a job at Microsoft and provide various tips for jumpstarting a career. But what about internships? For many students, this is the first step to getting on a career path and can give great insight into what lies ahead in the post-graduation world. Richard Bretschneider, a Program Manager for Office PowerPoint, interviewed a team of five PowerPoint interns who worked at the Microsoft Silicon Valley Campus for three months this past summer. They came from schools across the country including Stanford, BYU and U-Penn. In this podcast, they speak to their first impressions of MS, what surprised them about the company and the perks of a California summer. These interns came from all three development

Can I get a job at MS without a degree?Dear JobsBlog: I have tons of real world experience but no degree. I have seriously deep industry knowledge, accomplishments and “next wave” roadmaps for my industry. Do I have any shot at getting a MSFT recruiter’s attention? How about giving a guy a few clues, eh? - Degree of Interest   Dear "Degree of Interest": Great question. Microsoft has always prided itself on finding the best talent anywhere, regardless of where it comes from. Yes, we do a lot of recruiting on college campuses and that gets a lot of press. But we also spend a great deal of time scouring resumes, job fairs, industry events and shows looking for people with great talent. In the beginning a degree can be important. Each position has its own story, but here are a few of the common reasons why some positions on the career site have been posted for almost a year:   The role contains a very niche skill set. In these cases, the role could be opened for the full year while we search for the 1 to 2 percent of candidates that have this skill set. LeBron James Back, Cavaliers RollLeBron James missed the last two games for the Cleveland Cavaliers due to wanting to rest some nagging injuries. Against the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night, LeBron was back and didn’t waste any time dominating the action. In 42 minutes, LeBron had 23 points, ten assists, six rebounds and three blocks. Mo Williams chipped in 21 points for the Cavs, while Delonte West had 17 points off the bench. The Sixers, who were playing at home, were actually leading the game after three quarters. But a poor fourth quarter doomed the squad. Andre Iguodala had 30 points, seven rebounds and five assists, [...]Post from: EveryJoe LeBron James Back, Cavaliers Roll

Lance Berkman Injury Update – Left KneeLast season, injuries kept Lance Berkman from living up to his potential. The bad news for the Houston Astros is that the injury bug has struck again: Berkman needs knee surgery that very well could force him to miss the beginning of the 2010 baseball season. The good news is that the knee injury is considered minor. At most, Berkman will miss a month of action. When he returns, doctors expect him to be near 100%. The surgery is needed due to a knee bruise. The 34-year-old first baseman hit .274 with 25 homers and 80 RBIs last season. Considering that he [...]Post from: EveryJoe Lance Berkman Injury Update – Left Knee

Larry Johnson Signs with the RedskinsNot long ago, Larry Johnson was one of the most dominant running backs in the NFL. However, he has struggled in recent years. The Washington Redskins now hope that Johnson can regain some of that magic. In Washington, Johnson will join forces with Clinton Portis at running back. Portis is coming off of an injury plagued season and there’s no guarantee he’ll be 100% by next season. With that in mind, Johnson is good insurance. Last year, Johnson had 581 yards in seven games with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals. The best season of his career came in 2005 [...]Post from: EveryJoe Larry Johnson Signs with the Redskins

Piquadro Laptop Messenger BagThere’s nothing like a luxurious leather laptop bag. When shopping for bag, look for rich calf leather and plenty of organizational compartments. Your bag should be able to hold your computer, accessories, adapters, files and all your other everyday essentials. One of my favorite bags is the Piquadro Light from Forzieri. This classic laptop bag is big enough for a 15-inch notebook. It has a padded pocket for your laptop, two main compartments and lots of other pockets. Peter Cappelli Suggests We Outsource Our Leadership to IndiaPeter Cappelli's recent HR Executive column, Leadership Lessons from India, is much more than  a tongue-in-cheek recipe for solving some of our leadership woes. The George W. Taylor Professor of Management at The Wharton School, makes serious sense in describing that what is amiss in the US is a failure to see Business goals and objectives as anything but money- especially the money that the leader can acquire for himself. Peter points out that Indian business leaders' order of priorities are a bit different than most of their US counterparts as shown below: "1. Chief input for business strategy; 2. Keeper of organizational culture; 3. Guide or teacher for employees; 4. Representative of owner and investor interests; and 5. Represen

Sources of Hire 2010: Taking Its MeasureJohn Zappe's Source of Hire article on ERE Wednesday (2/17), a day after my ERE webinar, offered a great snapshot of the information we look to share each year.  We we finally published CareerXroads' 2010 Sources of Hire whitepaper Friday. It is our 9th. I almost remember why we began doing it in 2002- to document how the Internet was impacting recruiting (since the hype about "traffic" never seemed to lead anywhere). Earlier last week before finishing the report I dug out a 1998 SHRM/EMA study about 1997 SOH data and used it to start the discussion this year. The purpose, which I wrote about here was to contrast just how much has changed in the last dozen years. In the conclusion of this year's whitepaper, I noted the top sources of an

Sources of Hire 1997: A Trip Down Memory LaneI just finished CareerXroads 9th annual Sources of Hire whitepaper- its being edited as I write this. We'll publish sometime next week when I have two webinars on the subject (one here with ERE).  To offer some context, I dug out a 1997 SHRM/EMA study to use as part of the intro so I could contrast the evolution. Its a hoot but also a lesson about not standing still...and some still are.   Here’s a bit of history to set the stage, provide some context and entertain. 12 years ago, SHRM, which had recently acquired the Employment Management Association, engaged in a joint survey of “Staffing Metrics” via a mailing to 5500 prospects- all of the 4000 EMA members and a sample of randomly selected SHRM members and volunteers. 256 com

An early peek at the data will be discussed privately in an "open mike" webinar with survey respondents and CareerXroads colloquium members before the end of the month but an ERE webinar next week (2/17) will be the first public look at the current SOH data. In addition to collecting data about how firm's hire, we also ask each year about how they did versus previous years and what they predict the coming year will bring. Two years ago, January 2008, when we asked respondents about their future plans, for the first time, m

Diversity of Thought and the Google-China Controversy: Who Walks the Talk?Google is thinking about leaving China. Really?(he said very slowly and sarcastically) For years I’ve been listening to companies whining about how they have to cave to various local customs that violate basic human rights standards. The most common rationale is that it is better to give some hope to those who are discriminated against, supressed or otherwise denied basic freedoms by being there than not. Really? B_ _ _S_ _ _ Google’s comments are disturbing and disappointing. Their rationalizations would embarrass me if I were an employee. Do no evil indeed. If Google’s leaders couldn’t imagine China escalating from censoring the search queries of dissidents in 2006 to searching for the dissident who made the queries in 2009…wel

Source of Hire: Slowly we turn...step by step...Mark Mehler, my business partner in CareerXroads, and I are in the midst of collecting Source of Hire data from this past year. We started two weeks ago and will finish in another week and a half (January 31). Then I'll crunch a few numbers and write another whitepaper.  For nearly a decade we've been observing and commenting on the shift of recruiting sources of hire and the context in which the data is collected and analyzed (and then used to invest in the next cycle). The last SOH whitepaper is still quoted several times a week and considered "recent" even though we don't think it is (all of our work is in the public domain). The data is seriously flawed. But that isn't point. It is better to understand what firms "attribute" their hire

The fact that yesterday's subject matter reflected the medium was just coincidental.  The combination of a comfortable guide (Laurie Ruettimann), diverse content (see next paragraph), pre-conference relationship building (#Monstersocial), intimate non-traditional setting (Comix on 14th street), and multi-media virtual conversations (free, live video-streaming, Twitter and google wave) were sufficient to engage nearly every attendee
